I agree with the need for charging locations.

Mind you, as far as I can recollect I havent read much along the lines of I want an ev but not sure about the number of chargers at Taupo.

I think poeple get too hung up on the range stats. Probably because of all those tv ads which show cars driving up the side of mountains/accross fords when actually its used to take the kids to hockey practice.

If the distance to more than 400km, I'd probably just fly and get a small car at the destination.

That's really only 200km each way - a trip to parts of the Coromandel will set you back that easy.

Having said that, range will become less of an issue as charging tech evolves and batteries along with it. A 30kwh Leaf would be great if I could get to the skifields and back from Auckland with two charges along the way, or if I could charge it in the same time it takes to fill a car, but unfortunately we don't have either just yet. We're getting close, but we're not quite there yet.

True, though I imagine you are going to Thames for a reason rather than just driving there to turn around.

So you could use the rapid charger in Thames for a top up or one of the three other rapid chargers on the peninsula or if you are staying for a holiday plug it into a wall socket at your bach.

:-p

(Ive always been a little cynical about all those car ads going on about driving up the side of mountains or powering through (european) windswept valleys. Peddling the dream vrs the reality that most of us never use cars they way they are advertised to us. Making us feel less depressed with our lives working in concrete boxes with the thought that maybe we could drive up a mountain one day; after shopping, dropping the kids off to practice/school, stuck in gridlock traffic. I have several memories of passing gravel wedged land rover discoveries driven by the fentalton set on river banks while I drove my tiny 2wd suzuki alto while on fishing trips)

A day-trip to Luke's Kitchen is worth spending a day doing. The issue isn't the fact fast-chargers are there, it's using them back-to-back that's the problem :(

Okay so this software update totally isn’t bull!!! I got my 2016 30KWH SL updated 3 days ago.

Before the update my battery according to LeafSpyPro was showing 72% SOH with 10 health bars showing in the car, and only charged up fully to 21.1KWH and I would average MAYBE 70 miles on a charge before flashing the low battery warning. Fully charged the guessometer was always wildly inaccurate during the drive since purchasing the car new, and the full charge range was estimated always between 78-88 miles since the degradation down to 72%. New it would go up to 101 miles before quickly diminishing. My Leaf has 21,200ish miles on the odo.

After the update my SOH jumped to 87% (rounding up from 86.68%) and when fully charged the usable KWH jumped from the 21.1 to 24.4! The guessometer doesn’t seem like its really guessing anymore either and has been incredible accurate which I am still shocked by. The first full cycle charge to 100% after the update my range showed 90 miles with all 12 health bars back out of 10 prior to the update. The second full cycle the next day the range jumped to 111 miles and today before work it showed 121 miles. This is all without eco mode which I never user, on a level 2 charger in my garage.

My round trip is 44 miles a day so about 22 miles each way to and from work and about 90% highway. After the second day of it showing 111 miles to E the estimated range left was 64 miles, and today after unplugging and it showing 121 miles to E when I got to work the car showed 98 miles left. I understand the system is recalibrating but I am not a hypermiler at all. I am a 24 year old man and I personally cruise on the highway at 70-75 with the AC on auto at 70 degrees. I live in Texas as well if that matters.

I am beyond happy that the main issue was just poor battery software optimization. Obviously my battery has had some degree of degradation as it only charges fully to 24.4KWH but it technically is now a 2 year old vehicle as it was built in May of 2016 and sat brand new on the lot for a YEAR until I purchased it.

Pretty convinced a Leaf is the way to go for the next car. Just a case of waiting until I have the scratch and I'll see what's available in six - twelve months time.

This looks encouraging. I've heard Nissan NZ will be supplying the patch very soon, but I'm not aware of an announcement so far. I did try to book my LEAF for service and they said they would apply any software updates they found that were appropriate for the car. That wasn't a specific commitment so I decided to wait until something more firm was made known.

Complicating things a bit is me in Australia for 5 days of each week for over a month........

As my ownership of a 24kWh Leaf approaches its first year (bought the car over 11 months ago) it is interesting to look at how things have worked out.

I have been using the car for a 70km total round trip commuting from home to work and the car works excellent for that.  It is now a three-year-old car and still has 12 bars, even running the heater and travelling at a real 100kph (110 on the speedo) it is able to do the trip with more than 20% remaining battery.

The running costs are impressive - no petrol, no oil or filters.  The power bill is up, but buying petrol would have cost ~$1500 more over a year.  Over an above electricity, my total spend on repairs and maintenance has been $35 for a puncture repair.

In normal use, the car has been fantastic.  Cold weather starting is exactly the same as warm weather starting, there is no raised idle during warm-up like on a petrol car.  It is really zippy around town and on the open road it has no problem quickly getting up to 100kph.  Basically, it is doing the job just fine and costing much less to do so.

Granted it's better than what he had, but it's still lost over 5kWH in two years, & only one of actual use!!

That's getting close to 20%.

The 30 kWh Leaf actually has ~28 kWh usable, so 24.4 kWh is closer to 90% than 80% (rounding to 1 significant figure).

Reporting of battery capacity is one of the inconsistencies in the EV industry, some advertise total (e.g. Leaf) whereas others advertise usable (e.g. Ioniq).

The reply you received from Nissan when trying to book for service was similar to those received and reported by other 30kWh owners who have approached Nissan NZ dealers. Nissan NZ have told their dealers they are "negotiating" for the firmware update with their sole owner, Nissan Japan. Everybody seems baffled by this, although one or two theories have been suggested. One, that Nissan Japan has to get the patch tested in countries other than US and UK because the patch's results might vary in different places because of climate,  doesn't seem logical to me, although I have a lot to learn about EVs, thermal battery management etc. Surely if Nissan North America has issued a general recall that covers a wide range of climates from the east coast to the west and from north to south. Far more logical, though I hope wrong and insulting, is that Nissan Japan has a fit of pique about its Japanese buyers who, due to Japanese Government subsidies, are able to sell their near-new Leafs to "grey markets" (e.g. NZ) at lower prices than they would require to sell them new.

https://electrek.co/2018/07/06/nissan-leaf-prototype-new-battery-pack-leaked-fast-charging/

From the above:

When Nissan released the next-generation last year, many were disappointed that it didn’t feature the long-anticipated bigger 60 kWh battery pack and quicker fast-charging technology.

Over the last few months, we learned that the updated powertrain is actually coming with the 2019 version of the Leaf.

...Based on the report, the new version of the vehicle would feature a 60 kWh battery pack as expected, but also a new 160 kW electric motor, 11 to 22 kW onboard charger, and a fast-charging capacity of ~100 kW or about twice as powerful as the current version.

Those details are still unconfirmed, but it appears to be solid.

The comments made on the above article are worth reading, particularly with regard to "active thermal management" of the new 60 kWh battery.

Now the question is, will the 60 kWh Leaf be a better buy than the 64 kWh Hyundai Kona? At least the Kona should be delivered here by December / January (for somewhere between $70k - $80k) but when can we expect the 60 kWh Leaf?

Personally, if the price is the same, I'd get the Leaf.

I am very happy with my current leaf and the Kona boot looked small when I looked at the petrol version.

Better battery means longer range which means I want the bigger boot to put things in.

But if I won the lotto, Id go for the Ipace. I want a normal dashboard with nobs etc.

Got a Facebook ad for City Nissan yesterday - telling me they're stocking the 2018 MY Leaf (40kwh).

It doesn't show as a new model on their website, but they do have a used one listed as being for sale:

https://www.citynissan.co.nz/vehicle-search/nissan-leaf-2018-658140/

$58K, 1,100km.

E: Judging by the buttons on the entertainment console, this is an import-demonstrator.
