GV27: All GVI cars are showing as being patched at the moment according to their website.

Sounds about right. I received an email from them on Thu, 19th July stating amongst other

...

It appears that Nissan will not be offering this to the New Zealand Public so last weekend we had our partner (and EV Wizard!) Walter from EVs Enhanced spend some time at GVI completing updates on our stock 30kWh Leafs, installing the much anticipated recently released firmware update from Nissan

This was a great opportunity to do back to back updates and test the stability and integrity of the process and ensure once offered to the public there was minimal chance of BCM Bricking (Lock out). We are happy to say that this trial was a great success and we can now confidently offer this out to you, our GVI Electric Family!

...

Due to the substantial investment required for special service tools, labour and software licencing there will be a small charge for the update of $205 Inc GST. This same service will be charged out to non GVI customers at $250 Inc GST.

Please keep this GZ community vibrant by contributing in a constructive & respectful manner.

I'm scheduled for a software update from GVI in Lower Hutt on Thursday.  I'll report what the LeafSpy and practical changes are.

Currently I have a SOH 80.3% 2016 30kwh Leaf X, 11 bars, 22000 kms.

I'm looking forward to the update and am hoping for a 10% improvement!

The Motor Industry Association has expressed concern over the safety of a locally-adapted software patch for the 30kW Leaf – but the suppliers are defending their work.

“The critical point is that the software fix is specific to the market the vehicle was produced for,” Crawford says. “A software fix designed for the US or UK market will not work for vehicles made for and sourced from Japan. Worse, it could seriously damage the vehicle’s controller that manages charge flows.”

GVI’s Hayden Johnston was not available for full comment; however, he indicated he is hugely disappointed the new vehicle industry would take aim at firms trying to support customers where new vehicle distributors had failed to do so.

See my reply to Ruki of 14 July. Maybe it's taking a chance accepting the firmware update from a non-Nissan dealer, but in the absence of any meaningful response from Nissan since March, when the issue hit the mainstream media, it's one many 30kWh owners (and more dealers than GVI) have been/are prepared to take. And how risky is it? Walter Larason, of EVs Enhanced, Christchurch, has credentials on his "home turf" that I've not seen dismissed in any of the local online forums. My own car was upgraded on Friday, July 13. Two capacity bars were restored; the SOH went up by 15.5%... And the latest GOM is 194km on a 100% charge. Before the update I was lucky to see more than 145km. The car is not "bricked", nor do I believe the "vehicle's controller" has been "seriously damaged". As far as I know, no one in NZ has yet reported adverse results from the update available to them.

GVI updated my LEAF 3 weeks ago as a test....and the result has been good.

My SoH went from 83.43% the day prior to 92% today after a bit of driving around.
The AHr (amp hours) went up 4 full points from 69 to 73. That's good.
The Hx (resistance) went up 4 full points as well from 73 to 77. That's less resistance. That's good.

My maximum available capacity at full charge is now reported as 25.8kWh which is up from 23.7kWh prior to the update.  That's two full kWh....or 12-15km worth of range. The maximum when new was 28.1kWh, so I very much appreciate recovering about 40% of what had been (notionally) lost.

I understand the issue was actually around reporting the correct status. But when you're driving, you make decisions using that information......so having the range look like it was reduced is the same thing as it being reduced.....in practical terms.

Newer 2017 LEAFs - made roughly after mid-July 2017 - already have this update from  the factory. My car was made in late 2015 or very early 2016....so needed it.

So they knew about issues in 2017 but it took a group of citizen scientists to raise any action from the manufacturer over a year later????

I'm interested to know how they are doing this. Is it UK updates for the UK cars and JDM updates for the JDM cars?

Absolutely ... although some of the more advanced geeks seem to ignore that. Also to be considered is the loss in value of cars with "apparent acclerated battery degradation" and their consequently lowered SOH percentages. Today, at a local beach carpark, I met and spoke to a 24kWh owner who bought his car three months ago when he was warned off the 30kWh at GVI because of the battery scare. Two and a half weeks ago, just after my own car had the firmware update installed, the dealer who bought the car for me at auction in Japan last August told me he would restart importing the 30kWh for his customers. So to date everything looks encouraging. It will be interesting to see if the "good news" is as widely reported on radio and in the press as was the bad.

It's worse than that. In NZ Nissan is still not offering the firmware update through their dealers. The car was never imported by them, so they can't help. Astonishing!

http://autotalk.co.nz/news/nissan-leaf-30kwh-checks-continue#more-46564

From the above:

"Henrik Moller of Flip the Fleet says “there is as yet insufficient information available to form any reliable scientific conclusion about whether Nissan’s instrumentation error is a sufficient explanation for the observed declines in reported battery health of 30kWh Leafs”.

Because it was mainly "Flip the Fleet" research that first brought all this to the attention of Leaf owners, I'm not sure why people are prepared to pay $250 to have the software update done when the scientists aren't convinced that this will "fix" the problem of the alleged fast degradation of the batteries of 30 kWh Leafs.

And the software update isn't even issued or endorsed by Nissan NZ, so I agree with your comment that "Maybe it's taking a chance accepting the firmware update from a non-Nissan dealer".

I think it's even more of a chance buying a 30 kWh Leaf at this point in time, even if the software patch has been applied by dealers. I would want to wait until the Motor Industry Assn is happy that the firmware update is in fact safe. They must have some solid evidence to say that applying the update at this time is risky: “A software fix designed for the US or UK market will not work for vehicles made for and sourced from Japan. Worse, it could seriously damage the vehicle’s controller that manages charge flows.”

If you are regularly operating the vehicle to the edge of it's range I can see why you would want the update.

Scientists they need evidence. Now they will monitor the cars with updates for a long period and compile that data. Takes time, as did the original study.

Drive EV in Taupo and anyone in Chch shouldn't have any trouble.

Walter Larason (of "EV Enhanced") is doing all the updates where ever they may be being done. The dealers are contracting him to come to them.

The update costs $250 and takes about 20 minutes.

If you don't want to spend $250 then this isn't for you. Keep talking to Nissan. I had no problems paying as Walter has developed a very smooth process and has put in the work to make this easy for everyone else......now.
