Subsidize more public charging. As that will mostly benefit people who can only afford cheaper / older EVs. As less range means more of a need to use public charging. And it will help to provide the biggest incentive to those who drive their EVs the most. Which means a better payoff for the government, in relation to the amount carbon emissions reductions gained Vs money spent.

This will also be fair to those who want to buy an EV, But who can't buy one now for whatever reason. As those public chargers will still be available when they do eventually buy an EV.

Subsidize the interest rates when buying an EV on finance. As it would make it far easier for low income people to get an EV. As you currently can get a reasonable secondhand ICE car for around $5K. But a reasonable secondhand EV is around $20K. If you have to pay 16% or so interest rates. Which are typical for secondhand car loans, where you don't own a house or other similar assets.

Again, this will help low income people the most. As it avoids the trap, where the savings from owning an EV get eaten by interest costs. And saving up for the higher purchase price doesn't work either. As you still have to pay the higher running costs of an ICE car, while you are trying to save up enough to pay for an EV.

Allow companies to write off the entire purchase costs of an EV and / or EV charging equipment, in the year when purchased. Instead of having to deprecate the purchases. This is revenue neutral for the government. Yet makes a big difference to cashflow for the company that is buying the EVs / charging equipment.

It will also help to encourage the installation of privately owned / used charging equipment. EG - chargers installed in staff car parks. Hotels installing EV chargers for their guests. Landlords installing EV chargers in their rental properties.

https://insideevs.com/nissan-leaf-pricing-2019-60-kwh/

14 Sept 2018 By Eric Loveday

"While [the 2019 Nissan Leaf] pricing is okay, what we’re disappointed by is the fact that Nissan still is reluctant to commit to a date for the highly anticipated 60-kWh version that reportedly will come with active thermal management for the battery pack.

This article refers to the 40kWh battery and a $50k AUD price, which sounds about right. However, I'm guessing that the reference to 400km range must be a mistake because that sounds like the expected range for the upcoming 60kWh version which I'm sure will be more expensive than that.

Nope, not a mistake, (but also not true)

400km was what Nissan told the world press in '17 when they announced it, ( the article you link to is from then)

It was under the JC08 test cycle, so legally they can claim it in Japan, but it doesn't really translate into real life.... (pretty much like ICE fuel economy numbers)

Here is the Nissan press release from japan that quotes 400km

The US one at the same time quotes 150miles (240km)

Gen 1 Leaf S - can be replaced for any aftermarket, G & X (with two rows of buttons on the sides) has climate control and charge timer integrated. Hence replacement for aftermarket is not desirable. Few years ago I have imported 2013 head unit from fresh USA wreck, checked pin-outs - it is plug and play and compatible with Japanese Leaf. You would need both rows of buttons as well, Japanese buttons will also work with 1 audio feature missing. I've made the stand to check those on the bench. At a time there were a number of faulty AV units on eBay sold by someone close to the service department and selling those from the dumpster. Identifiable by the specific markings.

Off topic - I am after few LBC from any Leaf year/model for experiments, most likely those will be destroyed, hence not prepared to pay much.

"For the past two years, Nissan has offered owners of its first-generation LEAF electric car (and the e-NV200 electric minivan, where sold) the opportunity to replace their car's aging battery packs with a replacement unit. The price? In North America, $5,499 (including return of the old battery pack).

Identical in capacity to the battery which shipped with the car, the replacement service -- and a more recent campaign to offer remanufactured battery packs at more than half the price of a new one -- this battery replacement program seemed to give early LEAF owners a chance to keep their cars running without forcing them to buy a brand-new car. And while it wasn't affordable for all, some owners did take Nissan up on its program.

But now it's come to our attention that Nissan has quietly increased the price of its battery replacement program (http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic... ) placing the cost of replacing the battery pack well above the value of many of the cars which would need a new pack. (depending on whom you ask, our 2013 Nissan LEAF is valued somewhere in the $5-7,500 price range, making a battery swap now economically pointless)"

Bring on legislation to prevent manufacturers from preventing third party battery manufacturers being able to interface with software etc to provide generic batteries...

Ie right you repair legislation which is being pushed in parts of usa

They will have to start subsidies on the replacement batteries as well. Since the car is subsided the replacement batteries look expensive, but reall batteries are just very expensive to begin with.

Looks like Nissan will sell only one spec level of 40Kwh Leaf in OZ, so I'm expecting something similar here?

It would be great to have local parts, battery refurb and so on.  I guess we'll see next month when the government unveils its EV incentives whether this is likely.

I hope someone buys them.  When the Leaf came here as a NZ new car, it was not a hot seller.  Everyone wanted Nissan to sell new Leafs here, to other people, but unfortunately nobody wanted to buy it for themselves.

Given the lack of fast charging stations in Aus I'm surprised they aren't leading out with the 60kWh model. Range is going to be severely limited in summer with the A/C on 100% non-stop.

Most likely because they have no idea when the 60Kwh unit will be available for small market delivery...

As it is the 40Kwh won't launch in OZ until "May or June next year"

Maybe they need these as optional extras
