There are only 4000 EV's in Australia, which is pathetic. There is more than twice than in NZ alone. Unless something has drastically changed you can't expect them to sell well there. Its probably fair to say anything Nissan AU/NZ says is mostly hype. Anything they can't sell in Australia they will want to offload here like they did last time, which that means no telematics or maps working in the car since Nissan locks that down in hardware. If they bring NZ new EV's to NZ at the same time, I wonder how they will manage that?

Honestly I couldn't care less. I have no desire for an extra spy on my activity - as if there aren't enough already - that I have to pay a monthly a fee for, and as far as maps goes the spy I already carry around with me has instant access to maps that are always up to date and I can still use them when I get out of the car.

They claim the downunder leaf will do Apple CarPlay and Android Auto,

If it is done properly I suspect most people would go just use this option....

( Although I'm betting real money it will be a corded solution :(

Sure I get that, gps is not that valuable once you have bluetooth audio working from your phone, and the rest of the head unit isn't very interesting, hence why most people don't bother translating the Japanese version; the english version is not more useful or easier to use once you have it setup. I don't use Google products so I'm not too worried about the spying.

But preheating your car in the winter before you get in would be nice. I'm installing an OVMS system which hopefully will play nicely with my home automation system. Fingers crossed I can get it working in my 2016 Leaf.

They have much better public transport than us in the cities and much larger distances to cover in rural areas, plus parts of Oz have expensive electricity, so they don't have the same factors as us to encourage EV.

Also since the vast majority of their electricity is generated from coal (even worse, brown coal in Victoria), going electric does very little for their CO2 emissions.
Since the majority of the parliamentary Liberal Party and almost all the National Party appear to genuinely believe that global warming and human-induced climate change are Fake News, don't expect that to improve any time soon.

Last I heard, it's possible, but at the cost of losing functionality. The charging timer and charging level settings would no longer be accessible...and couldn't be changed if they decide to do strange things.

Its basically because you cant (easily) import second hand cars into Australia...

Given half of the NZ EV fleet (5000 vehicles) are 2nd hand Leafs, I'm pretty sure Australia would have a much high take up if they could get them...

-as an aside it would probably also raise the cost to NZers are they would be bidding in the same 2nd hand auctions in JP and the UK

Gen 1 Leaf S - can be replaced for any aftermarket, G & X (with two rows of buttons on the sides) has climate control and charge timer integrated. Hence replacement for aftermarket is not desirable. Few years ago I have imported 2013 head unit from fresh USA wreck, checked pin-outs - it is plug and play and compatible with Japanese Leaf. You would need both rows of buttons as well, Japanese buttons will also work with 1 audio feature missing. I've made the stand to check those on the bench. At a time there were a number of faulty AV units on eBay sold by someone close to the service department and selling those from the dumpster. Identifiable by the specific markings.

Off topic - I am after few LBC from any Leaf year/model for experiments, most likely those will be destroyed, hence not prepared to pay much.

Was there a gen1 LEAF S?

I thought the lowest trim level (S) only came in after the refresh in late 2013. Prior to that it was only X and G?

It's not economically pointless, though.

The price for the 2013 car may be low...but that's with the old battery.

Add a new battery and the value goes up...and should be compared to a new car with similar capacity.

You'd have a hard time finding a 24kWh LEAF with a *mint* battery for under $20k.

Definitely worth it.

Their politicians are owned by the coal industry.

That's why Malcolm Turnbull was dumped as PM....he actually wanted to do something about climate change. The "Trump" faction in his party rolled him.

Australia could power itself easily with solar and wind. But Boss Coal won't let them do it.

Not a very bright lot over there....based on who they elect.

This isn't quite accurate. Driving an EV on coal sourced electricity, while obviously not as good as renewable sourced electricity, still produces less CO2 per km that petrol/diesel.

Purely from a security of supply point of view and non-environmental view, coal is favourable over petrol because coal is a domestic energy source, where as most oil is imported.

From a human health point of view, the health hazards of coal emissions are easier and cheaper to control than petrol and diesel.

Not saying coal is good, just saying it is less bad than oil.
