Its basically because you cant (easily) import second hand cars into Australia...

Given half of the NZ EV fleet (5000 vehicles) are 2nd hand Leafs, I'm pretty sure Australia would have a much high take up if they could get them...

-as an aside it would probably also raise the cost to NZers are they would be bidding in the same 2nd hand auctions in JP and the UK

I didn't know that, that explains it perfectly.  The emissions/coal argument never made sense since EV's are cleaner even when running on coal.

When it comes to buying EV's New Zealanders understandably buy the second hand models from Japan or the UK.

If we had to buy a new one, we would have a lot less than Australia.

I don't use Google products so I'm not too worried about the spying.

I got some bad news for you...

Care to explain that?  Who is worse than Google?

PolicyGuy:

happyfunball: There are only 4000 EV's in Australia, which is pathetic.  There is more than twice than in NZ alone.

Also since the vast majority of their electricity is generated from coal (even worse, brown coal in Victoria), going electric does very little for their CO2 emissions.
Since the majority of the parliamentary Liberal Party and almost all the National Party appear to genuinely believe that global warming and human-induced climate change are Fake News, don't expect that to improve any time soon. frown

EVs are still better even if all the power is from coal.

Two things here:

1. I'm responsible for my emissions and I can clean those up. Dirty grid operators need to clean up their act. Beyond the ballot box and who I choose as my power company (if I have any choice) this is up to someone else.

2. I can install renewable power generation at my house or business and make my own power.

Either way.....people wanting to lower their emissions must not allow themselves to held hostage by irresponsible operators.

They have much better public transport than us in the cities and much larger distances to cover in rural areas, plus parts of Oz have expensive electricity, so they don't have the same factors as us to encourage EV.

It's becoming easier for Aussies to access used imported EVs. There are now several importers.

Facebook (+Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp), Twitter, Apple, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Amazon ... if you aren't paying for the service in cash, you're paying for it in being spied on. Then there are all the covert government spying programs that Snowden brought to the public's attention. And even if you think you aren't being spied on, the NZ government forces telcos to store enough information to retrospectively spy on you whenever they want, too.

It's 2018. You are being spied on.

Sure, these things are common knowledge, and I'm not worried about 5 eyes watching me.  I'm just trying to minimize the amount of tracking done by people who will sell my usage data to third parties , and for that reason, don't use an Android phone.  As you say, if you're not paying for it, you're the product.  Android is free and they sell your usage info to make up for it.  Same deal with facebook.  Microsoft and Apple are definitely not as bad, they still track you but they don't sell that info to others.

Its important to see the differences here between what kind of tracking is done, by who and for what reason.  Just assuming the whole internet is out to get you is not helpful and will just lead to apathy.

The Stats say there are circa 5,000 registered EVs in NZ, it would  seem that 93.75% of them are in Wellington given how many Nissan Leafs I see on any given trip around town.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I've come to a similar conclusion - it was either that, or there are four people who own the Leaf in Wellington, and they spend all day driving around places that I drive too! (probably because they cost so little to run, they feel they can!)

Per-capita numbers for Wellington are slightly lower than Auckland.

https://www.transport.govt.nz/resources/vehicle-fleet-statistics/monthly-electric-and-hybrid-light-vehicle-registrations/

I reckon they all live in Karori, and drive into town via Kelburn each morning.

There are at least two that drive the Rimutaka's daily - would love to have a chat with one of them - ours is a 75km commute daily, but with the hill in the middle. Others are obviously doing it, be rather intersting to have a chat around how it's working out for them.

Population density is higher in Wellington so you see them more maybe?  I haven't been to Auckland in years (except for the airport) but the southern suburbs in Welly are crawling with Nissan Leafs.

I was in a 3-Leaf convoy between Albany and Silverdale on the way home one afternoon...
