All this raises an interesting question in my mind. Is it possible with current technology to build a foldable solar panel you could take with you on a camping trip, spread it out, and use it to refuel your vehicle? How much acreage would you need? How long would it take?

There are some roll out solar panel options but they are large and bulky and would still take quite some time to charge.

A multi day back country camping trip in say a cybertruck might work, but not fully charging your car at work in the carpark -  though covering the entire car might get you 20km a day or something?

It would be interesting to see the assumptions involved in that (km/year, vehicle type, charging location) etc, but I agree that the cost of charging points is simply ridiculous. Requiring a type B RCD in particular, when there is already earth leakage protection in the EVSE and in the vehicle is nonsense.

TBH I've been charging from a standard (RCD enabled) plug socket for years, not felt the need to fit the wallbox which would cost a fair bit (too much imo)

And in the real world large chunks of the population don't own homes and do not have a hope in hell of getting one. Large chunks of the population live in rented accommodation and the terrible attitude of the nations landlords shows they will never pay for the installation of three pin plugs let alone solar panels and EV charge points. Large chunks of the population struggle to buy $10,000 cars so yeah $60,000 is a piece of cake.

If the landlords don't do it by choice then that's how they end up with regulations that require them to, similar to insulation and heat pumps.

I'm not sure how saying large chunks of the population can't afford a $60k car is a revelation. Obviously many people rely on second hand cars, which come from those who can afford to buy new vehicles. That's why you can get a second hand Leaf for under $10k today.

With due respect to our friend MikeB4, BEVs are here and now in the real world, working for lots of people and getting better all the time. FCEVs are decidedly... not... as this thread is tantamount too.

I am reminded of the saying "don't let perfect be the enemy of good" (although thinking about this further, FCEVs are not even anywhere approaching perfect so perhaps it doesn't even apply).

Is a BEV for everyone? No. In the same way that brand new cars or cycling everywhere are not for everyone. Hydrogen is a dead duck for light vehicles IMO, but we already have a thread for that.

ok we should ignore all options someone somewhere cant afford right now and cross our fingers hoping for the miracle of the fuel cell.

Come on get real.

Edit; forget it. Too much tribalism in this thread to have a realistic conversation. I'm out

You seem to be confusing tribalism with opinions vs facts.

So, yeah, maybe time to stop...

Back to the original topic.

There are reports that Hyundai has Halted it's Hydrogen Car Development.

Further reducing the incentive for anybody to invest in fueling infrastructure for Councillor Phil Mauger's car.

It's a pure virtue-signalling publicity stunt from a minor politician trying to get noticed. I doubt anyone here had ever heard of them before this story started, and now they are being discussed, so it worked. They wouldn't remotely have purchased a car like this one before checking up on the fuel situation. The cost of the car wouldn't have come close to covering the value of all the free press coverage they got out of it; so as a publicity strategy it worked.
