$570. I'd have had that done to our LEaf we hadn't already swapped the head unit.

Bugger, i have an english head unit so all i want is maps, but thats a tad dear for just the maps

I'm ambivalent about maps because of costs associated with those old tomtom's units.

I've been playing with android auto with bluetooth to stereo in car which works quite well and provides do much more functionality than maps.

If next version of my EV comes with android auto and inbuilt maps I think I would still be using Google maps.

I am going to have to look into my power bill as we are Low user rate so its about 35c/kwh and the distance according to the leaf is 66 km so that works out at about $90 a month which is ok as its about half my current fuel bill but thats a 40% increase in our power bill so I think switching to standard user might be an option.

Another plan worth considering for EV owners is a night & day plan, particularly if you don't use electricity for home heating and/or water heating (or if you have a timer on your hot-water to only heat on night power). The charge timers you have experienced are provided with night and day plans in mind. My power is about 25 - 30 % cheaper from 11pm to 7am, so I set the timers to charge between these times to take advantage of it.

If you're ecologically or minded, it also helps avoid the on peak power time where a slightly larger percentage of power is generated from FF's.

Have a look around, a number of retailer have specific EV plans, ( Which are basically cheap night rates)

Was there any further news about the brake failures identified last year? Was looking at buying one but the last thing I want is for the brakes to stop working randomly.

Yes, IIRC there were a minority that did not have an obvious cause, but most were associated with bad batteries.

The official advice was not to use the OBD2 Bluetooth dongles when the car is off (link here).

My personal experience supports the official claims and advice. With the car switched off, on multiple occasions I have observed my OBD2 dongle keeping the brake unit awake and causing to fail to shut down/sleep (and subsequently causing my 12v battery to run flat), so there is no doubt in my mind that the OBD2 dongles affect the brake unit in some way when the car has just been shut down.

In 25,000km of driving twice I have experienced the ABS seemingly reduce brake pressure on all 4 wheels when only 1 wheel was skidding (on a painted line, going down-hill in the wet) - and no, this was never right after the 12v battery had been flattened). In this fail mode the ABS seems to not cope with asymmetric traction as well as other cars would in the same scenario.

I used to have a OBD2 dongle plugged in an running 24/7, but in the 9,000 km since disconnecting the dongle I have not had the ABS behave weird and additionally the brake pedal transition (between regen and friction braking) seems to have been seamless when it used to be noticeable and quite disconcerting (perhaps the latter is a coincidence).

I don't buy the bad battery theory at all - 3 design features preclude it. The system has a back-up capacitor that powers the brakes should the 12v battery suddenly fail. Additionally when battery 12v voltage sag's the DC-DC convert powers the 12v system from the traction battery at a charge rate of up to 120 amps (heaps!), so it has double electrical redundancy, and triple redundancy if you count the energy from the drives foot directly building hydraulic pressure. The 12v battery is only needed to start the car, very much like an ICE.

Apologies to Forum Drop here but cant see the best place to post this question. I've just purchased a Leaf, and whilst the 8A charger is 'adequate' for overnight charge I really want a 16A one which makes it practical for a midday charge on the weekend if needed. I have upgraded the feed to my garage from 2.5mm TPS to 4.0mm TPS and installed a RCD and 20 A MCB on the singular weatherproof power point which ill be changing over to a Caravan Point as soon as I get the EVSE.

I've looked at whats available at the 16A Rating and there really only seems to be 2, the OEM Audio one which is just 16A or a 2 in 1 done by EV Chargers both coming in at $599, ive swayed more towards the EVSE than the dedicated charger as It also opens up more options with plugshare charging points with the 16A sockets.

My 3rd option here and this is the question I have, there is a few on AliExpress with a Duosida Brand that are about half the price than in NZ, in reading some foreign reviews they don't come off too badly, but what im really looking for is some local opinions, It probably doesnt meet regulations, but anyone in NZ have a 16A or any type of Duosida EVSE and what is the opinion of it?

I've had my eye on the Chinese ones but never plucked up the courage to buy one. From what I've read on line most people seem happy with them except some are not very water-proof and fail after they've been rained on/ended up in a puddle - not they way you should treat them of course, but it can happen accidentally and they should really be IP64 rated. I've also read a few aliexpress reviews where people had been sent the wrong unit (different current rating, etc) so make sure the vendor has good feed back.

It's unlikely a Chinese one will have a SDOC. Without one you will be breaking the law in NZ with potential insurance implications if something goes wrong.

Looking for where I saw this but one of the guys from Blue cars has commented about EVSEs, they brought in a few Chinese ones but they were flakey as, they source Swedish ones instead. I recently ordered a 10m Type 1 unit so I could plug directly into the garage point and run the main cable under the door [and still have length to spare]. Temporarily secured to a shelf. The wallpoint cable is a bit short but still usable, I'm happy with it and so I've relegated the OEM Audio unit into the boot so I now have two options for on-the-road AC charging.
