TimA: Get a 2008+ Audi, Same price as a new ford or holden and much better.
You would be an ID10T to buy a new Holden or ford. Plus you said that you plan on going on icy roads.
You realize those cars have 250KW+ and spin their wheels on a dry road trying to move themselves.

I am just trying to be kiwi. since when would a kiwi turn down a v8 holden/ford.

btw wheel spin is torque not kw, yes driving in the wet is like ... sidewayz

scuwp: Go get a Hyundai sante fe or similar. I would personally avoid European if maintenance costs are an issue. Sounds like your usage would be more like an SUV of some kind. Both Holden and ford shutting up shop soon in Aussie. I wouldn't be buying a car made by a worker who knows they will shortly be redundant!

the thing is ... I reckon they'd still make parts from somewhere, shutting the car plant doesn't necessarily mean no more parts ... there should be lots of these things floating around ... but maybe you're right

TimA: Highlander yes, Stay away from the Korean cars, Good luck to you after 50,000 KMS, They wear out fast and drive like bags of crap after.
Those who still think Euro cars are expensive to repair are stuck in the past when they were not as common and parts were hard to get. They are just as cheap as fixing a new Toyota if not some are cheaper. I did all the bushes in my E46 and it was cheaper than doing them for the Toyota Corolla.

every generation has handled like a bag of pooz.

$50k-ish will get you a used range rover sport.
but best have a few quid tucked away for the inevitable repairs.

my pick would be a porsche cayenne.
much better built than any rr, faster and almost as capable off road.
lots to choose form for the price of a holden or ford.

gosh you're right the Porsche is dirt cheap! but my friend's friend had one and it couldn't do a grocery run without stopping at the pump!

Trunks2: My dad just got a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT (the V8 one) after after comparing it to the likes of a Commodore R8, Audi Q5, Merc SUV etc, huge step up from his VE Commodore R8 and it was much better value than the competition.

Its a beast, very quick. handles well and sounds awesome :P, not very good on gas as you would expect but very comfortable and he takes it up to the ski fields no worries.

The diesel one was good too (has air suspension which the SRT does not), over 1000km to a tank apparantly, but no comparison to a V8 :P

yes I did consider the SRT ... but at that price you'd get the RRSport 2015 no brainer

Sounds like you want to consider a Subaru Legacy GT SpecB. You can even get it in a wagon body, so even more space. Plenty of power, plenty of space, awesome traction & handling. Similar price point to the Falcon XR6T, so cheaper than the Commodore. The AWD really does make a difference, especially in icy/snowy conditions, in my experience.

yes I do like the legacys - they are pretty amazing but I have had subarus all my life (just sold an STI last month) ... the latest model has an electronic park brake, five speed auto (!>?>!) [ no you can't get them in 6 speed stick no more] and no movement on price (the ford is being discounted 20g by the dealer!)

I think this is what I'll do ... wait till the 2014 RS4 (bcos it has dual clutch DSG) drops to the price of the Holden in 6 years or the price of the Ford in 10 years ... that will keep my wallet happy [I won't even wait for the RS6 coz that's larger than my mortgage at the moment and there's probably only a handful around that I might have to go to London to import one myself]

The parking brake doesn't bother me, but whaat no manual, crazy! I drove one recently in aus (branded Liberty of course) that had the 6 speed stick, so presumed we had them here... insanity!

i have had a 2006 ve ss v for 4 years now - love it

more than enough power - loads of space for 5 - eats long trips - well featured for its age - handles well for its size - and from what i wanted in car - great bang for buck

of course it has pretty sh*tty gas mileage - but maintenance has been better than expected which helps in terms of overall running cost

would i get the new model? - yeah i think i would - prob the ssv redline - as it is imho the best bang for buck

would i get the ford? the xrt is a great car too as i understand it - but had always wanted a v8 - haven't regretted that decision one bit :)

ps: loads of hot euros for similar money - but as others have said for the same money it wont be new

The overland is only round 90k and it goes pretty well and it goes great. RRSport looks a bit more like an evoque than I'd like but my uncle has one and it goes great but imo it doesn't look like its worth that much considering its specced out at like 200k.

you probably had never driven a ford or have you? how is the ZF tranny (in the ford, audi, bmw, range rover, yeah pretty upmarket stuff) vs the holden one whatever that is

PS easy to say test drive etc but the Dunedin dealers never stock high end models of anything!
