Do unto others as you wish they would do unto you, that is my motto.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

scuwp: Here we go again, yet another "I am a perfect driver therefore the rules don't apply to me" thread. Some people need some lessons in basic physics. Slow down, obey the road rules, and enjoy the drive = no revenue gathering. Simple really.

I agree.

For everyone that is up in arms about the reduction to a 0 tolerance for speeding. I read something once that was basically:

Hit a pedestrian at 50kmph and they have a 90% chance of living.

Hit a pedestrian at 60kmph and they have a 90% chance of dying.

Pretty good reason then to set the limit to 50kmph (without tolerance) in residential areas!

Funny how folks see nothing wrong with being a few kph over the limit and will defend their right to do soo. (Like somehow they think they're capable of- and do-drive at exactly 104.9kph)
Yet if someone dares drive a few kph under the posted speed, somehow that individual is responsible for altering the future time space continuum for every other vehicle on the road.

Personally I'd like to see speed camera's in all work zones, and wouldn't have an issue with double fines in speed restricted areas.

Something just occured to me : it might be a OSH requirement for the Speed Camera Van to be fitted with a orange flashing light when in a "work zone" as a opposed to any attempt to disguise the van.

Thats kinda funny really if thats the case.

KiwiNZ:
nathan: i look forward to the Police rolling out cameras to detect slow drivers and trucks in the right hand land....

The slow driver thing is tricky, what is slow? the code refers to "slow inconsiderate" but thats a open ended statement. Given the speed states the Maximum permitted speed is 100KMH it does not specify a minimum and there word from the authorities is the 100KMH is not a target.
I agree though the slow inconsiderate driver is dangerous.

In Victoria they'll do you for doing 90 in a 100 zone... They also do you for driving in the right hand lane if you're not overtaking.

It's awesome.

i personally see this as a bigger concern than someone going a few K over the limit.

Its likely to cause far more risk if someone going very slow (say for arguments sake, an example i see pretty commonly 40 in a 80 zone) Often all this does is drives people to take Stupid risks - Had multiple instances recently of this were the oncoming car was taking the risk in my lane.

If you see this _commonly_, I would suggest you get a car cam with GPS then report the incident to the police complete with the file footage.

They might not prosecute but will certainly send them a note about their driving and you will feel you have done your bit for road safety.

Or you can continue to complain about the unfairness of the system.

I think the zero speed tolerance has done more harm than good.  There seems to have be a bit of an upsurge in accidents these past few weeks. Driver behaviour has become very erratic. Came over the Kaimai's the other day and I'd say that would have to have been the scariest trip ever. I do a lot of driving and I have never seen such poor driving as I have in the last few weeks since the zero tolerance. Dumbest idea ever!

Another point to remember: you can be pulled over for doing 52kph (for example) any time of the year. Nowhere in the initial media statement did it say you WILL be fined for doing 1kph above the speed limit; it said you can expect to be pulled over if exceeding the speed limit. This COULD result in a fine, but a lot of people seem to think that suddenly every single person is automatically going to be fined and all discretion is out the window.

As I said above, you can be fined for exceeding the speed limit any time of the year. Over the Xmas holiday period the message is to think of it as a speed limit rather than a speed tolerance. It's not about arguing whether 101kph is suddenly more dangerous than 100kph, it's about trying to get everyone to stick to the posted limits.

It's not necessarily the speeding that causes the crash, but in basic terms the speed is what determines the severity of the injuries. It's about slowing down to give yourself more reaction time if needed, and to hopefully lower the severity of the injuries if you are involved in a crash.

I intend to at some point.

90% of the time its on rural roads, generally the same bunch of locals who are lets just say, known to police...

complain about the unfairness? i have more issue with peoples lack of consideration rather than the system.

So reminding people to comply with the speed limit suddenly turned everyone into crazy nut jobs behind the wheel? The logic totally escapes me....

The speed limit has always been the upper limit, and police have ALWAYS had the right to stop cars and where appropriate issue a ticket for 1km/h over the limit. A bit of publicity just reminded the public of that. Hell they can in certain circumstances give you a speeding ticket even though you are under the speed limit.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

i think there should be a 10% tolerance for your speed while on the roads. This accounts for inaccuracies in your speedo and in the measuring equipment police use. anyone outside those tolerances gets a ticket.

actually hit anyone at both speeds they both have a 99% chance of dying

the difference in the science was that at 50, during a normal person's reaction time, the distance travelled before they slammed on the brakes allows a very low collision speed. at 60, the distance travelled during time allowed to react is too far, giving a lethal collision speed as the brakes didn't get to slow the car enough.

so that assumes a few things: you see the human and you react and you (try to) stop (/avoid).

if you are distracted/fatigued/impaired/blind corner/mad pedestrian it doesn't matter.
