lxsw20: Not likley to strike any PAL/NTSC incompatibility?

The camera are apparently NTSC signal format. I was worried about it being in a SECAM format. The head unit I'm looking a purchasing has PAL & NTSC compatibility.

Have you looked to see if anyone does a Japanese to English conversion of the existing unit ? Giz-tec down in Gisborne might be able to help you out.

Sometimes the radio does more than just the audio of the car, some handle the air-con controls and other stuff you'd think was dumb to have the "radio" do.

Just a quick update if anybody is interested. I found this product (see link below) which will reproduce switching mechanism between to two video feeds for left and rear cameras.

I have found cheaper alternatives on Amazon and Ebay but they had delay timers when toggling between cameras.

Well I've managed to do what most of the Professional Car Audio Installers say that I can't do.

I now have two working cameras (rear & side) connected to my new Pioneer Double Din Head Unit. The video source through the reversing camera input is controlled via a simple push button on the dash. The small push button now enables me to toggle between the side and rear cameras. The rear camera will automatically jump into action on the head unit when the reverse gear is enabled (same as before).

So I have now retained the all the original JDM (minus the GPS navigation) functionality and I now have added function of BlueTooth.

It's was expensive project but that's because I purchased quite expensive head unit but it was still $600 saving in total if I wanted to have Professional Installer do the installer.

I did spend a lot of time using Google Translate to be able read/understand the Japanese car enthusiasts websites and the Google Translate app on my iPhone to translate Japanese technical manuals.

The biggest challenge I had was to find a 3rd Party Mazda Wiring Harness to connect the Head Unit to the car which needed to include the following wires:

Speed Sensor,
Parking Brake,
Reverse Trigger,
Dimmer/Illumination
Steering Wheel Controls.

I found a ton of these products on internet and retailers but none of them included the extra wires I required. My solution was to cannibalise the original Clarion wiring harness which included the all the wires I needed. I did find a one 3rd party product in Japan, but the overall cost was too expensive to get the item to NZ. Since I ran out of time at the weekend I did not get to connect the steering wheel controls to the new head unit. Pioneer does have some lacking technical documentation on this subject where as Sony and Keywood was quite good on the matter.

The new Pioneer head unit has a programmable feature which enables me to map and customise the steering wheel controls to the functions on the head unit. When I Googled the steering wheel controls for Pioneer I got a lot web sites saying I need to buy a Steering Wheel Control Interface (i.e. PAC SWI-PS or Axxess ASWC-1), which basically maps the corresponding car's steering wheel controls to aftermarket head unit. I don't know yet but I don't think I'm going to need one of these 3rd party unit (another $60-$120 saved).

Interested in your rear cameras. You said you have two and can switch from rear to side. But how do the two cameras appear on the screen? Are their images somehow integrated??

On my Mazda MPV (LY3P) it comes with two factory fitted camera side and rear. Using a product from Beat Sonic USA I'm able to toggle between the rear and side cameras. I only see one image at a time. The Beat-Sonic CS3EP unit tricks/emulates the head unit into thinking that the car is in reverse gear when it's not actually in reverse.

So I when I actually go into reverse gear the CS3EP will by default switch to the reversing camera video source. At any time I can press a small button to switch/toggle to the side camera (I don't necessarily need to be in reverse gear).

Here is a wiring diagram from Beat-Sonic showing how the small unit interfaces itself between the the head unit and the two cameras.

Now when I ordered the item online they only shipped to the US or Canada, so I used NZ Post YouShop service. $35NZD delivered from the US (more than what I was expecting). I think if I contacted Beat-Sonic USA directly I think I could of had the item delivered directly to NZ via UPS at a cheaper cost.

Ah, I took this sentence the wrong way, "to support TWO parking cameras (which are pre-existing) located in rear tail and one in left door passenger door."

I read it as two rear cameras in tail and another in door! Your setup is not so much a mystery after all!

I have one rear camera that shows the kerb pretty well. Must do some checks so that I know what the camera's superimposed lines relate to in terms of kerb/wheel alignment and distance (latter not so important as I have ultrasonic sensors as well).

Does that headunit have a standard reversing camera input? Just an RCA I take it?

Do you know if most cars that have reversing cameras have just an RCA to connect them back to their OEM headunits? (Did yours?)

This model of Pioneer has a dedicated video RCA port for the reversing camera plus a trigger wire to indicate the reverse gear is engaged.

I found most of the double din head units had the setup of reverse RCA port.

I don't know anything about any other make and models of cars wether they have RCA connector interfaced to there OEM cameras.

On my Mazda I had to purchase a Mazda official part (c900 v7 538) which is an aftermarket power supply with a built in video-out RCA port. This enables me to interface my head unit to the factory fitted cameras via the beat-sonic video switch.

Great post here, amazing work to get this done on your own.

Just out of interest, do you have any before and after pics of the radio? Also any pics of the factory looms, or camera connectors you used? I am about to begin this process and any pics would be great.

Funny this thread is been revived, just last weekend I installed a Pioneer AVH-2700BS which I purchased from Amazon in my 2005 VW Touareg. Obviously I didn't do my research properly cause if I had I would have found out that USA radio models only go up in increments of 0.2 on FM and 10 on AM (vs 0.1 and 9 in NZ). So I only can listen to half of the radio stations, gah. That will learn me. At least I saved $200 over the price of buying one in NZ. Next time I need to buy the euro version.

Trying to work out if I can flash the euro firmware onto it, but at the moment I am not brave enough. Going to wire in a reversing camera in the next week or two.
