I got a couple of sets done a few years ago , I got a set which is just a duplicate of the issued plates but in euro form and another set which is just for show at car meets and is never used on the road.

They were the same as the nz ones (done in Germany). The picture is of the ones just for car meets.

Both sets cost somewhere around $40 nzd from memory.

So yeah PP have a complete monopoly in NZ , I think there has been a few people try and challenge this but hit a brick wall straight away with the NZTA.

Thats the exact format/style I am after, where did you get them made??

Cant find anyone that makes them in that black logo style. Just blue or black but with only one logo instead of two.

Ours came through http://www.germanplates.com , however we got ours in a group buy.

It's a rort, just like here.

In South Australia, custom plates are $200.
Euro plates are $150.

A year.
Yup, per year... I have no idea how they get away with it.

BUT it only costs $22 to replace them.

And rego is $750ish.

Any profits from PP go to the road safety trust for road safety projects and research. IIRC PP are a not for profit organization, or at least they use to be. That's why there is no 'competition' because there is no money to be made other than operating costs. Fees are set by government in legislation.

Forgot to add that adhesive labels are permissible where it is impossible to affix an ordinary plate. The label still has certain design criteria to meet

Can you cite your source for this please? The text on the official site refers ONLY to officially produced (and sold) adhesive labels that they have never bothered to go ahead and make. When I last checked they explicitly said that no adhesive labels currently available were legal.

That's _precisely_ what I was talking about... I phoned up a couple of years ago because I noticed that and after some consternation from the front line phone people I got a call back from someone who knew what he was talking about and said the legislation was specifically to allow an authorised adhesive license plate product to be developed and used, but it hadn't been created at that point.

He was clear that the clause DID NOT allow anyone to create their own but referred to an authorised product that wasn't yet available.

(I know what you're going to say - it doesn't say that in the link you provided... Well, it doesn't say the aluminium plates have to come form authorised sources either, but they do. I think that is elsewhere in the legislation_)

Got hold of germanplates.com , they advised that they are not allowed to produce this style plate anymore as it is copyrighted by plates.co.nz

Uh, no. A "percentage" of every plate sold goes to the Road Safety Trust. It's most definitely not a non-profit with wording like that.

Actually... it doesn't say it. Anywhere. At no point is there actually a statement in the legislation (or, for that matter, any other legislation) that only authorised sources can produce plates. It only states that only the registrar can issue the unique identifier.

In theory, as long as you comply with the legislated format, the NZTA can't do a damn thing to you.

When I was looking into the pricing I was told that the PP pricing was set by the average cost of a Men's Suit
This was to avoid the Monopoly laws coming into play as NZTA only allowed 1 company to be the agent.

IIRC the rational behind it was that a PP is a fashion accessory, just like a Suit is, so this was the basis of the pricing structure.

I wonder if that sort of logic would stand today, and wonder if there is any documentation about that. You can buy a suit from hallensteins or even online pretty cheaply these day. I haven't looked into personalised plasts for a long time, but they seem to be really expensive these days. I recall they were about $400 last time I looked for a proper one, but now seen to be the best part of 1k, and they have different grades such as 3 letters and 3 numbers. Not something I am interested in though. Had a friend who purchased one for speculation after a new subaru model. Not sure if they sold it or not and whether they made a profit.

To be honest though, PPL's ripoff is better than some others. If I spit the combo "13944G" into PPL I get a quote of $999. If I do the same with PPQ (Personalised Plates Queensland) the quote is $2,395. In both cases they insist that "a portion of the proceeds will go to improving road safety". (But hey, at least PPL and PPQ don't charge you an annual fee like whoever the ripoff merchant is in SA).
