I'm impressed that you can control it at a range of 5km. Presumably you can't see the model at that distance? Which I thought was illegal? (NB: *I* am querying legality rather than safety, although CAA's position would no doubt be that the line-of-sight rule is required to ensure safety). What happens if it gets out of range?
Reading the other forum, it seems that the discussion degenerated into people venting their feelings rather than whether it was actually dangerous. No doubt the person who originally warned about the CAA thought he was doing you (and the rest of the R/C community) a favour.

The plane is fitted with an autopilot so if it loses the signal or video it will fly back to launch point.
I had a couple of mates positioned down the beach to tell me if any full scale aircraft were coming so I could land it.
However, it certainly was illegal. You're not allowed to fly RC aircraft out of site from the pilot. You can't fly them via POV, and you can't fly them on autopilot.
