I'm looking to buy a used car from dealer today, I've already seen and driven the particular car. When I first approached dealer the car was on loan, I enquired about timing belt and was told it would be sorted. However on second visit to see the car the belt was changed at 110, car is now 186, and it was changed 10 years ago. There was back pedaling over offer to change belt... as its "within recommended kms", however its double recommended years.


I didn't take him to task by reminding what he said, however I need a car and plan to buy it anyway and get belt changed in no more than 4 weeks time.

The question I have is, IF belt broke within that time, is that tough luck for me, or would that be covered by the warranty since car belt is within kms?

I hope you are getting the car cheap. Buying a car from a dealer that has done 186k is really high k's for a second hand vehicle. What sort of car, and what price are you paying?

You should be covered under CGA if the belt goes within 4 weeks, but I would be getting them to get it done, or at least get it in writing from them that if it breaks during the next 14,000 kms that they will repair/replace/refund.

Also, make sure the dealer has not got in their sales contract that all sales are business to business (I have heard of this happening so that they do not have to honour the CGA).

Honda Civic, $2500. In the past there would have been a signed warranty sheet supplied, stating 3 months or 5000km... which would be perfect. Last time I bought a car from there I asked where the sheet was and was told the recent changes to CGA mean that I receive better cover now in excess of the 3 months and 5000km based on reasonable expectation for kms and price.

I don't expect a new car for $2500, like some people unrealistically do when they buy vehicles from me, I expect an old car with some flaws, but I expect a legal, usable car for $2500. If the timing belt goes thats the end of the engine.

Yep, agreed. For $2.5k, a car with those kms is what I'd expect. Buying from a dealer will give you some CGA protection, and it would be reasonable to expect the timing belt to last until 200.000kms 9especially if they have refused to replace it because it is still within spec - get it in writing). Sounds like a good little car for the money.
