Smithy100: The current TG is a reboot of a much more dour and serious original (Tiff Needell anybody?)

That series ultimately continued, even to today by the looks of it at Series 25, as Fifth Gear.

wasabi2k: Yep, just reboot the show.

No point trying to be the old Top Gear which was basically the Clarkson show.

You will lose viewers, but maybe gain new ones.

Top Gear changed a LOT in Clarkson's time there. Change isn't always bad.

The show basically became 3 grumpy old men (although they weren't that old, just looked older than they were), usually driving overpriced cars that no normal person could own. In a way the internet and youtube has made car review shows redundant, so it is purely an entertainment show these days.

Don't forget opinionated, likely racist, objectionable, and offensive = entertainment +  That's what made it so good.  they took a standard review format and made it entertaining.

I used to love top gear, but was turned off by the little competitions they ran between themselves, which took up more an more of the show, which had nothing much to do with cars. The only bits I continued to like were the news they did, the celebrity driving around the track, and some of the car reviews they still did, as well as stig fasted lap.

xpd: Actually just watched the episode of TG with Chris as the guest, and he does seem to like his cars but it wont be the same, the banter the trio had made it entertaining.

Interesting to see how it goes....

I am sure he wont be the only presenter so banter will continue

I'd like to see them get Rowan Atkinson in as a co-host. He too has the car nut credentials as well as history as a supercar owner.

Nailed it. Surely he would have been asked? I'm off Top Gear it's about outlandish behaviour not cars but Atkinson I'd be in.

Not a fan of Chris Evans. When he replaced Terry Wogan on the Radio 2 breakfast show I stopped listening as he was just too manic for me, especially at that time in the morning when I need peace and quiet!

I'll pass on the 'new' TG and wait for the Three Stooges to pop up again like your favourite tatty old shirt or worn corduroys.

If you think old Tiff was dour, you can't be old enough to have suffered William Woollard reviewing the new Ford Escort...! ;-)

My impression is that he is very introverted and doesn't have the personality to carry such a show. Plus he is probably not a long term host as he isn't young

I doubt the BBC could insure him after his last incident :)

I've watched Top Gear for many years, and quite frankly, although I am fond of cars I didn't watch the show because it was a car show. I mostly watched it for its entertainment value, largely driven by the powers of Clarkson, Hammond & May. They have this magical "click" between their personalities turning simple scenes into something hilarious. The banter is what generated the ratings, not necessarily the cars. Without the three of them watching TG is pointless. I know Chris Evans well from my time in the UK although I hardly listened to Radio 2 (more of a Radio 1 listener), he is a good fellow but he will never be able to fill the footsteps left behind.

I am looking forward to a new show by C,H&M on ITV or Sky instead.
