Mattmannz: Pics please. I am looking at a Discovery 2 3dr TDi at the moment.
i used to own one.... the TDi engine is pretty gutless, and if you get airconditioning/heating faults it about $2K to fix with the amount of work to pull the dash etc. The Td5 and subsequent models were better performers.

offroad it went great though, difflock was useful.... I did a 'failed hill climb' at an offroad place in rotorua on street tyres - and actually climbed the hill. none of the other vehicles there that day managed to do it.

Yes they will go some amazing places - even more so with good rubber.

There's an amusing video I found on YT that pits a Disco 3 against a Landcruiser Prado in soft sand, I guess Dubai or somewhere.

The LC is hopeless and the Disco simply motors through each challenge as if it was on tarmac...!

I will be collecting it at the beginning of September and have taken out another mortgage to pay for the fuel to drive home from Chch via Queenstown! Still, a 300 bhp Jaguar V8 is worth every penny of that, I reckon! :-)

You'll know it's me if you see it - there's only one in NZ and Tangiers Orange is not exactly a subtle colour!

I used to have a workmate that was a Landy nut, he had a middle-aged Discovery as his daily driver and a few older ones as hobbies. He'd always say that the crumple zones on his Disco were about 3 feet into the other car.
At one point he shipped his beast over to Aussie and took a half year off to drive it around the outback.

A long time ago I was a passenger in a LR Defender that smacked into the back of a VW Golf.

The Golf driver turned out to be an Anglican vicar who said some most un-Christian things to my colleague who was driving! What appeared to annoy him most was that the rear end of his car was absolutely munted (the Defender bumper was indeed about 2 feet inside the boot space of the Golf!) but the only damage to the Defender was a bent number plate and a scratch on the galvanised bumper...!

That was forever damned in my eyes by being associated with Posh Beckham!

The new Discovery Sport is a nicer looking version of something similar.

I want the Discovery for work and I jumped on the G4 just for rarity value as only 39 were ever prepared by Land Rover Special Vehicles for the 2006 Challenge. This is the only one in NZ. There are 2 in Australia, some in the USA and most in Europe.

Have you driven the Evoque? It's a very nice vehicle.

Yes; I don't like the looks though. I find it a bit feminine and am more a Full Fat Range Rover sort.

My dream car would be the Holland & Holland version of the current FFRR. However at "from £185,000" for the car and "from £100,000" for the guns in the trunk, it might have to wait a while!

Evoques are for people who can't afford a proper range rover but still want to tell their friends they have a brand new range rover.

When Peter Troughton was CEO of Telecom he had a Range Rover, so did his deputy Jeff Carter and even though it seemed to be an "English" thing so did Chainsaw Jim Harrison. Seeing the 3 Rovers sweep out of the Telecom House carpark probably heading for the same meeting it was hard to avoid the feeling that Wellington didn't need more of them.

Generally improved from Discovery 3 onwards although they are complex cars (I read somewhere a Discovery has more than 20 separate ECU's on board!) and the parts have to travel a long way so repairs are never likely to be as cheap as a Holden.

I've put a 4 year warranty on mine.

The really early ones (Series III is the best choice there IMV) leak here and there but you can fix anything on them with a socket set and a hammer just about! Parts are dirt cheap, especially from the multitude of independent specialists in the UK.

I had a Series III when I was up at university and it had a whining thrust bearing on the clutch and a leaking bell housing gasket. Two of us removed the entire gearbox (through the driver's door!), replaced the parts and re-assembled it in the College carpark over a weekend! Can't do that with the new ones!
