I've just put a deposit down on what I realised was the sixth Land Rover vehicle I have owned in my driving career.

Anyone else have a soft spot for them?

Yes, I'm a fan but I can't say I've ever driven one. I remember going four wheel driving a number of years ago watching a number of 4WD's failing to climb an incline. I then watched an old Defender drive up it like it was flat. I'll definitely get one at some point.

What did you get?

The problem with that list is that its not comparing apples with apples.

My uncle has an old defender, he has done so much to it over the years. Had a large American Diesel V8 in it that bent driveshafts due to the amount of torque. Now he has put an air cooled Duetz-Fahr tractor motor into it. He reckons it is the best combo he has had. Big, torquey and dead simple. I think it is an inline 6 from memory. This is in South Africa though so it is easier to get away with doing things like that. It is used on their farm and my cousin has taken it all over South Africa off and on road. Really cool.

A friend of mine has a 110 Defender which he drove from London to NZ. That kind of reliability will do for me.

Admittedly the modern vehicles are hugely complex in comparison and that is probably the cause of some of the issues. 

This is a picture from the dealer - I won't be taking delivery until early September.

Owned and drove as a daily driver an ex NZ Army short wheel base 1964 series 2A. Loved it to bits. Was a member of the Canterbury Landrover Owners Club 'n all.

I drive a Jeep now but yep, I sure do still have a soft spot for anything Landrover.

My first car was a series 2A Landrover - ex-army swb softtop

Current drive is an '86 Range Rover

And there have been a number of other Land and Range Rovers along the way

My first (after passing my test at 17) was an ex-RAF driving school 88" Series III in a format commonly referred to as a "Lightweight" (more correctly from memory, a "Truck, Air Portable 1/4 ton petrol") - essentially a SWB Series III with different bodywork and flat hubs to allow it to be parked close side by side in Hercules aircraft etc for deployment.

It wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, but it was a great car and great to gain driving experience in because you could not make too many stupid overtaking manoeuvres: all over taking needed careful planning and patience. Sold it for more than I paid for it too, which is a trick I have not managed too often in cars.

Mattmannz: Pics please. I am looking at a Discovery 2 3dr TDi at the moment.
i used to own one.... the TDi engine is pretty gutless, and if you get airconditioning/heating faults it about $2K to fix with the amount of work to pull the dash etc.  The Td5 and subsequent models were better performers.

offroad it went great though, difflock was useful.... I did a 'failed hill climb' at an offroad place in rotorua on street tyres - and actually climbed the hill. none of the other vehicles there that day managed to do it.
