6FIEND:

This one can be a bit frustrating when turning right from Civic Cres (exiting the Westfield in Albany) and needing to make the next left hand turn.

One must enter the intersection from the left hand lane (on account of the bus lane on the right) then immediately cross to the inside lane (to avoid the requirement to continue straight ahead per the indicated white lines) then either cut back to the left hand lane on exiting the intersection or make an equivalent lane-change before arriving at the next intersection.

I do not believe you are required to go straight ahead if you are in the left lane. The arrow as you enter the roundabout (the 3-way arrow) indicates what you're allowed to do from that lane. So you wanted to turn right from that lane, you need to stay in the left lane the whole way around.

Further, I'm reasonably certain you're not supposed to change lanes part way through an intersection. If you enter in the left lane, you stay in the left lane throughout the intersection and exit in the left lane.

MikeAqua: In Blenheim on SH1 there is a level crossing bisecting a roundabout.

What could possibly go wrong ...

I used to cycle through that roundabout every day. I worked from home in Monro Street during the day then did a few evenings a week stacking shelves at New World.

There seems to be a consensus :-)

Given this, who has right of way in this situation?

EDIT:  Assume the blue car entered the intersection because the red car was indicating that they were making a right turn.  (The red car correctly begins to signal their exit from the roundabout immediately after passing the exit prior to the one they intend to take.)

You could argue that.

Or you could argue that the red car must give way because it effectively needs to make a lane-change to exit the roundabout.

Or you could argue that the blue car must give way because it has to cross the white lines that are painted on the intersection.

...all of which is why I consider it to be a pretty silly intersection.

Red car goes around once more.

Roundabouts should not have turn marking indicated on approach lanes. But they do get marked because most drivers have never been trained in the proper use of a multilane roundabout.

The Greenlane roundabout / interchange on SH1 in Auckland.

It's both a major cross street for east / west traffic between Remuera / east and Greenlane / anywhere west....as well as the way to get onto the motorway.

As usual, three lanes lead to two that merge into one. Traffic through here is choked most of the day, every day....and getting onto SH 1 northbound or southbound can typically take 10 minutes as you crawl along the feeder lane to the ramp...and down the ramp to merge at the rationing light before entering the motorway proper. Desperate people fill the roundabout trying to get into the onramps and eastbound cross traffic can't get through the wall of steel on the western side trying to go north.

When you hit Auckland and everything stops? If you got past Pakuranga, then you've probably run into the back of the jam from Greenlane and neighbouring Ellerslie....(which is almost as bad, but at least easier to get across, provided you don't want to use the motorway).

This Google Maps overview must have been taken on a Sunday morning (shadow orientation and relatively light traffic in full daylight). The images says 2016, but it can't be as the new train platform went in years ago...and that ain't it.

Another strange one. Google maps doesn't show it very well

https://www.google.co.nz/maps/@-36.8660801,174.6372737,3a,75y,295.68h,58.08t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sSsJfvSXU5fsFiUkwKNh7Pg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en

Coming down school road and turning right (central park drive) into oncoming traffic and then having to quickly get left  (but not too far left)

The bright people at Napier city council somehow came up with this smart idea

Its a left turn lane, on the right of a straight through cyclist lane.

In reality the cyclist lane should end before the intersection, or go between the left and middle lane.

A number of times I and others have gone to turn left and a cyclist has not seen the indicator and come through at the wrong time to almost get knocked off by a left turning vehicle on their right.

Its a stupidly designed intersection but the blue car needs to give way as with normal roundabout rules cars entering a roundabout need to give way to any vehicle already on the roundabout.

Ever since the Greenlane ramp lights went in, getting east / west is a real mission, as you say. Traffic feeding onto the ramps ( both north and south bound) block the natural east-west flows across the top of the motorway.. And still, the motorway is congested even with these feeder ramps.

I am ever credulous of the sheer amount of traffic flowing through this section of motorway, both ways, even through the course of a working day!

It's not trucks, or vans, or delivery vehicles, or service vehicles - the sheer number of people going about their business. Why, what are they doing, ? Dont they have office / factory jobs ?

Even the newish south western motorway from manukau through to dominion road is already at nearly peak capacity during the day, and this link, once completed at Avondale and northwards, is supposed to take the strain off the main north - south motorway. Yeah, nah ...

not quite OT but just to show that ANYwhere is a bad "intersection" if indicators and common sense are ignored!

A couple of idiots in that video. The driver of the van, and the motorcyclist trying to pass on the right hand side (while driving in a land where you drive on the right and pass on the left).

I have to navigate this one on the way home from work (approaching from the east and turning onto Wairere St). The options are:

A. Indicate left before approaching the intersection, resulting in other drivers thinking that you're turning into Toroa St.
B. Pass Toroa St then indicate left, resulting in very little warning that you're about to turn.

I tend to slow down when there are other cars around, because there's the potential for a collision!

Indicate at Toroa, then turn left down Wairere. There should probably be Stop sign on Toroa or No right turn.
