Mister Minit have a large range of replacement car keys that are much cheaper than the ones your dealer will offer. As long as you existing key is working it is usually pretty easy to program them. Worth a look to see if they have them for the make and model you are after. I do know that Holden is one of the makes they specialise in.

Your definition of "reasonable" is different to mine but I do agree that $400 is better than $1,000+

If it's anything like my Commodore the likes of Mister Minit can't help. The key assembly has a transponder chip buried in the plastic shell, and these need to be programmed to the car. Mister Minit doesn't have the tech to program the chips, and they don't seem to sell the flip blades for my car at least because of this.

They may be a sequence you can use with an existing key to program a new one, however this can go wrong and you can end up with none of your keys working. You'll also want to have a flip key blade cut by a proper locksmith who can digitally cut it to a code, rather than guiding off an existing key that will have some wear. They have to pay for access to the codes from the manufacturers as I am told, and your mister minit type stores don't do this.

I looked into changing my 2x Commodore fixed blade keys to flip keys. The remote portion of the key is the same, so it's only the key blade part that needs changing. Holden wanted from memory $400 per key blade, of $650 if you needed a new remote part too. Local locksmiths sell the key blade for about $80-100 and will cut and program for $40ish on top.

That's exactly how it's done.... I had no problem.

Edit: Wasn't a flip key though, just a replacement when the old one ran down.

What year/series? I asked a few of them here (In Melbourne) and they all said they can only do up to VZ keys - They didn't supply anything for VE or never as they couldn't program them. NZ might be different if they have paid for the gear.

That's was for my VZ SS. At the time it didn't include that model (VZ) but the guy said it worked just fine and it did. Have a VE now but haven't had a need to replace a key yet.

Yeah the key system was completely changed with the VEs (It was a whole platform change for the cars). Given the OPs car is a late model Holden - I suspect it will be a similar, if not the same tech.

To answer all the questions. I got an improved quote of $300 but still too rich for what they are providing. I wonder if I get a blank case with the flip blade, can Mr Minit transfer the electronic and immobiliser chip to this new case and then just cut the blade?

I think I will get this case and then go ask them.

Seen as it is your wife's car what is her opinion? Does she really need a second folding key? Seems like a lot of effort for little reward.

Not sure if its too late but the Mister Minit in upper hutt had a sign stating they can convert normal transponder keys to flip keys. No indication of cost though.
