meesham:I've known a couple of people who've owned them and they both said they're a pile of junk. John Cadogan reckons they're the worst mainstream vehicle you can buy:
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
Fabian: Hey guys, anyone out there with experience/own a holden captiva?
Looking to buy one (V6, petrol, 2012, onwards) but the feeling is really mixed out there. Seems like a lot of bad ones.
Any comments would be appreciated.
We have just been through this exact process, we are moving from a sedan to an SUV. We drove almost everything under the sun SUV wise and the Captiva's just felt awful in comparison. We started looking at the Colorado 7 on the lot as a result and then suddenly realised what had happened.
Ended up going with a Nissan X-Trail. Some of the smaller SUV's (Tuscon / Qashqai etc) were very nice but problematic mainly because i'm 6ft4. If I had more $$ to spend I would be in a Hyundai Santa Fe but they are so painfully expensive its hard to justify. Mazda's felt a lot like Captiva's driving wise but were in general better in our opinion & we have owned Mazda's in the past and haven't had issues with them.
Hope that helps or at least saves you some time.

If your after 7 seats, have you considered a second hand Volvo XC90
On the Captiva, I haven't driven one, but have heard that the Petrol ones are quite thirsty.

If you don't need offroad capability, then Mazda MPV are relatively inexpensive 7/8 seaters, a bit less van-like than some people-movers. I don't think they do anything brilliantly, but are a pretty good compromise.

Thanks for the time to write back. We are looking for a 7 seater and I think if we don't go with the the Captiva we will have to increase our budget. That's saying something as well I suppose, a reason why they are cheaper. Looking at the outlander but the seats in the back are awful.
Have another look at the X-Trails then, they have a 7 seat model. Nissan here in Hamilton have a stack of 2016 X-Trails that are ex-rental, they've been leased out for about 3 months are now for sale for about the $30K mark.
We ended up with a 5 yr old Hyundai iX-35 as the 7 seats wasn't a deal breaker for us. We are so far very happy with it.

I assume you were looking at an older Outlander? The current model back row seats are, imo, pretty good. They're comfortable for me, which says something. The previous model with it's cardboard kiddieseats were rubbish.
You could always buy a Ford Edsel ... ![]()

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

In my opinion it's a false economy to go for something cheaper when there's a good chance it's going to cause lots of problems later (or in the Craptiva's case early on). I'd be looking for a second hand late model Sorento or Santa Fe, the diesels in those are awesome and they're well put together, and in the Kia's case they might still be under new car warranty. The petrols are also good but are a bit thirsty.
Yes it can sometimes be false economy. The issue I see with going for cheap brands including some of these Chinese ones, is that they can use older technology in them. Sometimes the design is purchased from another car manufacturer, and it can be up to several generations old. That is why some look very similar to other brands older models. Some even use asbestos for some of the parts, such in brakes. So even though we have these laws for building materials with asbestos, they don't seem to apply with car parts, unless things have changed recently. They also can lack some of the safety features in more premium brands. I think it is better to go with a second hand Mazda or Toyota, than a new car for some brands, even though some of these other brands can sometimes have a really good warranty length. In Oz they are giving some brands 7 years warranty!
