Yeah, I've noticed the same with Caltex and (perhaps to a slightly lesser extent) BP. I'm not sure I'd call their 91 prices cheap... but they at least seem to match the 91 prices for the area, whereas 95 is often a good 15-20 cents dearer than the mobil right around the corner (Is this to do with the mix they're using?) And they often only have the 91 price visible from the road which looks reasonable, but then you have to drive in and look at the pump to find how much 95 is. Very annoying.

I wonder what would happen to the pricing if they were regulated into having to display all fuel pricing on there signs? Probably they'd just put the premium fuel pricing up so they could "discount" this too.

Whoa, I didn't realise that Mobil had ethanol, just googled it....So which fuel companies sell 98 without ethanol?

Edit: Mobil's website doesn't directly mention that it has ethanol included, you need to download a 'safety analysis' document to learn that fact.

From Mobile website:

"**At selected service stations in wider Wellington region, Extra Unleaded and Synergy 1000 may contain up to 3% ethanol and Supreme+ and Synergy 8000 will contain up to 10% ethanol. May not be suitable for all vehicle engines, check with the manufacturer before use."

I am quite sure that Mobile fuel in auckland does not have ethanol. (if it did, it would need to be labeled as such at the pump as some older cars are not compatible with it)

Unless you own a older / classic car, I'm not sure why you would be concerned about ethanol in your fuel. To my knowledge all modern cars are designed to run up to a 10% mix of it fine... And it's not like it is bad for performance, race cars run on it. Ethanol is definitely less nasty for the environment than other octane boosters in higher octane fuel.

Just avoid using it in your boat. Modern outboards can handle it fine, but the risk of having water get in the fuel is much higher in a boat due to free vented tanks being common (and the general wetness of boating).

Normally just an 98 octane offering, which is E10 (10% ethanol, 90% petrol)

From this I can see that the cheapest 98 in Auckland is 1.98 at Mobil vs 2.18 at BP.

You often see variation in prices of 91 petrol across BP stations in your region, but does that same variation apply to their Ultimate 98 product? When out and about I tend to go to the station that has a good 91 price and fill up with 98, but I'm starting to wonder if the 98 price is fixed across all stations? Has anyone noticed this before or even completed a little research into the subject? In other words, is it worth shopping around for prices of 98?

Please note that this post is not intended to spark a 91 v 98 debate :-).

No 98 is not discounted when 91 is, around Takanini the difference is significant.

Mobil are pretty good and last time i filled up it was 10c dearer for 95 than 91, but ive noticed that most BP and Mobil stations are going away from 95 to be exclusively 91 and 98. That really sucks for those the use 95 as now there are fewer places to fill up.

Usually its about 20-30c dearer for 98 here in auckland.

Actually seeing a few stations having all 3 petrol grades around now, so people may have the option at some of the newer BP's. Haven't noted this at Mobil as I don't go there.

If you use WAZE on your phone, you can see the prices at all the petrol stations around you. I have it selected to show the 91 octane prices.

So if you use Waze for navigation (e.g. you want to see traffic conditions, police, hazards, road closures etc) you use the search->gas stations option.

As with any crowd sourced app, the data for some stations can be old but it tells you how old when the list comes up.

I try and keep that stuff (more specifically the water it absorbs) away from my engines.

Thanks for the helpful answers everyone. Kind of confirms what I suspected - little to no difference between BP stations for Ultimate 98. The positive from this is there is no need to shop around for 98 prices which makes life a little easier :-)

Yes, I can't recall specific ones but Auckland.
