Hi all,

You often see variation in prices of 91 petrol across BP stations in your region, but does that same variation apply to their Ultimate 98 product? When out and about I tend to go to the station that has a good 91 price and fill up with 98, but I'm starting to wonder if the 98 price is fixed across all stations? Has anyone noticed this before or even completed a little research into the subject? In other words, is it worth shopping around for prices of 98?

Please note that this post is not intended to spark a 91 v 98 debate :-).

BP in Takapuna (Clifton Connect) will frequently have very cheap 91 and 98 (Not displayed on board) will be a solid 40-60C more expensive.

Good way to draw people in, Honestly i never check the price. I just know i need 98 and my tank is empty.
If i cared about fuel prices id be driving an EV.
Mobil in Takapuna (With its crap ethanol mix) is 20C cheaper than BP at Clifton.

Yes but if you drove past a BP station that was selling 98 for say 20c less than your local BP station you'd stop there and save a bit of cash, right?

But that would mean id have to drive in, Squint while trying to read the price on the pump, Remember how much it was at my home station (Clifton) then judge if its worth filling up.
BP dont display 98 price on the display boards.

Which is precisely the reason for my post ;-)

If BP displayed the price of 98 on the display boards then I would know the answer to my question.

Whoa, I didn't realise that Mobil had ethanol, just googled it....So which fuel companies sell 98 without ethanol?

Edit: Mobil's website doesn't directly mention that it has ethanol included, you need to download a 'safety analysis' document to learn that fact.

I fill up on 98, but get BP fuel card pricing. I have looked into this and although the price of 98 doesn't seem to be fixed, it pretty much would only vary by a few cents between stations. I've been to BP stations selling 91 at 30-40c cheaper than another BP station; but 98 price was the same. You may notice the BP on the motorway out of Auckland usually doesn't have much discount on 91, but its 98 price will be much the same as the other stations that do discount their 91.

So basically, you do not need to shop around for 98 pricing.

Driving around the lower north island recently you can see Wellington prices for 91 are often 25 - 30c per L higher than Levin. Rotorua and central NZ can be even cheaper.

Have a VW so it needs 95, and have noticed that BP has the biggest difference between 91 and 95, a good 30c. In limited research (checking the price when filling up) have noticed Z seems to have the lowest markup, about 20c more.

Go compare the fuel quality between Z 95 and BP 98.

Petrol is landed in Wellington (Seaview), yet is still more expensive in the Wellington region (Wellington, Porirua, Hutt) than it is in Levin! I suspect Levin is cheaper due to the fact there is a Gull in Levin, and not Wellington.

As a result, when I travel this weekend (Wellington - Tauranga), I won't be filling up in Wellington, I'll do it in Levin.

For the last year or so petrol has been about 10 - 15c cheaper on the Kapiti Coast than it is in Wellington despite the closest Gull being Levin.

Masterton is also really cheap, although there is a Gull there. Shows that prices could be a lot cheaper in Wellington.

Caltex are horrible for having cheap 91 and hugely expensive 95 in auckland, there will be a good 20-30c difference

Mobil are pretty good and last time i filled up it was 10c dearer for 95 than 91, but ive noticed that most BP and Mobil stations are going away from 95 to be exclusively 91 and 98. That really sucks for those the use 95 as now there are fewer places to fill up.

Usually its about 20-30c dearer for 98 here in auckland.
