Great idea but to late. I'd like to see NZ bring this in by 2020

 

 

NZ???   We have 80% renewable energy but it will be 2050 to be 100%. We are useless.

 

 

Except that it ain't making any difference. 4 million people contributing ain't gonna make squat if the other 6.996 billion are burning trash at 10x the rate of the 4 million.

Solar cells & Powerwalls will change this utterly. No new nuclear plants needed. No new electricity distribution infrastructure.

I agree this technology is important.  The ability to store day time power generated by renewable is critical.  But right now it's still too pricey.

 

Power-wall list price is $10k for a 13.5kWh usable capacity system in NZ + ~$2k installation + solar array. 

 

Average power consumption is NZ is 30kWh per household per day (EECA figure).

Good numbers but time will drive them down by a huge amount.

 

Why?

 

First of all, the price of Lithium cells is set to drop as the various mega factories come on line. Five years from now, the three largest manufacturing facilities on the planet will be online churning out cells at well below current prices.

 

Secondly, the same economies of scale which will drive down the cost of the raw cells will also drive down the cost of making and installing power walls.

 

Finally, the biggest effect of all will be the availability of used cells that can no longer do any good in a vehicle. Once a cell has lost performance to the extent that can no longer support the range demands of an electric vehicle, it will be re-purposed for use in power walls. Those cells will be available at really low prices and will make power walls cheap. Nissan are already in that market producing power walls that use cells that are considered end of life for vehicle use.
