Wow, uptight.

However, my paintball sentry gun was vetoed.

That's a shame. It could do double duty as a Kitty Dissuader.

How old am I? I actually lived in a time when it was quite normal to leave your keys in the ignition while popping into a shop. Really lazy people would even leave the motor running.

You must be very old!

Anyone doing that in the uk in my memory was asking to get their car nicked. Worse, their insurance would refuse to pay out.
My car is always locked when I'm not in it- and indeed always locked when I am in it.

MikeAqua:

We were burgled earlier this year.  Thieves stole the transponder key for one of of the cars (which was in the garage).  But they never took the car.

I think the were emptying drawers into bags without looking.  They also stole some remote controls without taking the components they controlled.

We have a key cabinet now and have gone full cray cray on security systems. However, my paintball sentry gun was vetoed.

What is a " Cray cray "? some type of fish?

I remember when they ran advertising campaigns on TV to tell people to stop doing that, as it was very common. How things have changed, NZ is now a totally different country and culture. I wonder if people have insurance cover if they do that these days?

The car in the current case was an older model that was manufactured for sale exclusively in (low crime) Japan.

It was unlikely to have much in the way of sophisticated security systems.

No there is no insurance cover when you leave the keys in the ignition.

All my early cars had the ignition key number beside the switch keyhole. Not difficult to spot from outside.

In Wellington Jamison's on Wakefield St had a complete selection of keys already cut as the same key would have been used on a number of different cars. I think the story went that Ford Cortinas only used 6 key numbers. There were reports of people jumping into the wrong one and driving off using their set of keys. That was before a few years wear and tear meant that a screwdriver worked as well as the key.

When I was living in Dublin the last few years there was a spate of car thefts in the winter when people would go out and start their car leaving it running to heat the interior and defrost the windows while they popped back inside to finish their toast and cup of tea. People were genuinely surprised to come back to an empty driveway.

I must be a bit younger.  "Security" for us used to mean not leaving the keys in the ignition when you left the car.  The only reason to wind up the windows was to stop the rain making the car interior wet, and it's harder for cats to spray the inside ...

If someone steals my can and thrashes the bejezus out of it, I don't really want it back and I am happy for a them to stack it into a tree a high speed and kill themselves. Ultimately society will be left a nicer, safer place with slightly lower crime statistics, and slightly higher average I.Q.

I'm going to swing by the liquor store on the way home and buy a hip-flask. May as well have a backup plan to prevent future crime.
