Far better IMO to compare the price of food and building materials, and why we seem to pay more in NZ than Oz or even the UK, for some of the same NZ produced goods.

Geektastic: I was in Melbourne for the weekend and was surprised at how much lower fuel costs were (unleaded was advertised around $1.51).

Anyone with more knowledge of the two places able to shed any light on the disparity? It is quite large.

The oil companies are playing politics in NZ, jacking up the petrol price before July 1st, when the regional petrol tax starts.

It's that simple.

I've spent most of the last 3 months in OZ - Brisbane, Adelaide, Sydney and Perth.....and it's obvious to me what's going on. The currencies are both stable. Other costs are stable......but NZ's price took off like a rocket after the fuel tax was announced.

Definitely politics.

The last time i did calculations, they were exactly the same when you account for exchange rate and the multitude of taxes applied to NZ fuel. That may or may not have changed.

Handle9:

Dingbatt: How much tax (oops I mean fuel excise) is charged on Australian fuel?
Edit: Google says 0.4c/litre.

Take the NZ tax out and petrol in NZ is about $1.50.

More like 40c/l (according to google)

Oops, quite right, page said dollars, I saw cents. Have to slow down and read more carefully!

I like @LinuxLuver 's comment about the politics of creeping the price up ahead of the 'new' fuel taxes. Although the just announced production increased by OPEC should see them trend down a little. Several things I have been getting quotes for to have transported have already increased from 1 July.

Really, just compare diesel and petrol prices in Oz. Almost the same. Compared to here with a different taxing system.
