I'll bite...
What's your big argument against the seemingly sensible idea of reducing pressure on our roads by better utilising our woefully-underused freight rail lines?

Haven't they decided to put a toll on the new road, which I don't believe was the original plan? That will likely make people who are more strapped for cash travel on the older routes. I do think that some of these big trucks carrying things such as logs across the hill to Wellngton should be using trains, or they should restrict them to certain times. At the moment the hill road is barely wide enough, and some trucks appear to have to cross the lane to turn corners. The wear and tear on some roads I suspect is higher from these massive trucks.

In 2020 once Transmission Gully and the expressway thru to Otaki are both open, at least there'll be an alternative route on this side of the north island.
Well, nearly.
The current plan will only have the existing route from where Transmission Gully ends just north of Paekakariki to Raumati South where the Sandhills Expressway starts. I think there ought to be at least a two-lane parallel link through that area, but that would have to go through QE II park, so difficult

Further north, this bridge this bridge on SH1 is the only road crossing of the Waikawa stream. I'm not a civil engineer but that stream don't exactly look as wide as the Amazon river to me. It's frigging incredible that nothing else exists (except the railway crossing) to head north.
That was probably going to be replaced by the Otaki - Levin "Road of National [party] Importance", but since that's now almost certainly not going to happen this side of 2025, if ever, maybe replacing that bridge and the Manakau Railway Overbridge just south will be done as a separate 'Safety Improvements' project.
