State Highway one has been closed since early morning due to a truck rolling near Pukerua Bay. Now two trucks have collided on SH2 closing the Rimutaka hill road.

Looks like the only ways out of Dodge now are the Paekakariki Hill road and the Akatarawa roads. What a crazy situation!

Bugger.  I'm heading to the Wairarapa tomorrow.  I hope it clears up by then.

They are closing the Paekakriki Hill road for the weekend but hopefully they will change that plan. They have said SH1 should reopen this afternoon.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

^^^ I heard the plan to close the Paekakariki Hill road was put on hold due to SH1's closure.

The Akatarawa road is pretty scary to drive; I'd hate to think of how many people are trying that route today. At least the weather and visibility are good.

The boat is in Nelson and we are doing the Tora coastal walk so mooring it could be a bit dicey laughing

The Akatarawa is not too bad, although it was somewhat sphincter tightening when I went over it in a Unimog

Just done the Paekakariki Hill Rd northward, with about 1000 other cars, at about 10 km/h, behind a cyclist.  But then it is quite steep.....

Geeze, that will put a crimp in your holiday plans.

The only blessing in the whole thing is that it happened before the morning rush hour. I would imagine ("hope" might be a better word) many Kapiti Coast commuters are working from home today. Think of the carnage if it had happened at 10 and the poor sods were in the city without being able to get home again.

At least, I hope that's the case.

I may have enhanced my reputation at work of being psychic, because I asked my boss on Wednesday if I could work from home today to avoid the holiday traffic... bloody glad he said yes!

Don't worry it's still going to bring out the "all the stuff on those trucks should be moved on trains" brigade
