It has tank mode sign me up

Tank mode allocates torque to all four wheel to turn the vehicle around on the spot on suitable terrain.

Damn that's an ugly front end. Why could they not design something that would appeal to the SUV/Ute buyers of the world.

Damn, it's ugly all the way down.

Rivian’s ‘skateboard’ electric platform ... puts the battery, drive units, suspension, braking and thermal system all below the height of each wheel.

That seems unwise in an SUV ... I wonder how well it wades (Pajero 700mm without a snorkel)

I'm impressed it's so light - at 2,600kg it's not much heavier than my Pajero.

640km of range is impressive (Pajero about 800km with two pax).  I'd be interested to see what range is towing 2,000kg.

I think we all just need time (a lot of time) to adjust to the grill-less front ends of EVs.  I have to say no SUV looks complete to me without driving lights and a nice big LED light bar.

I wonder if it plays nicely with a 12v winch?

Surely it has air conditioning? If so, then there would need to be a condenser (aircon radiator) somewhere. And if the battery pack has active cooling - again a condenser or some sort of radiator is needed.

So I don't get why EV makers think that radiator grills are redundant.

I'll take a guess that really low bay temperatures in EV eliminate many traditional cooling requirements.

This thing makes the Lada Riva and Trabant Rycomat look like design of they year winners.

Electric is cooler. You're not exploding fossil fuels several thousand times a minute. A magnetic field in a coil is turning a shaft.

Less wear. Less heat.

There's lots of room there for aircon. I really like the look of it. The whole package is great.

Quite a detailed video on the rivan here.  They have packed in the storage and features and the load and range are reasonable.  Some really cool stuff like on board AC outlets, the 'gear tunnel' and an onboard compressor which would be great for off-roading and camping.

Still fugly, though.  But it is distinctive.

Really? Tastes obviously differ. I really like the look of the Rivian ute and SUV. :-)

To me the only jarring thing is the headlights. But it is certainly a point of difference that says “this is a Rivian”. It is well thought out with all of its extra utility features. But it is still a luxury vehicle.

If it ever gets produced in RHD and comes to NZ, it will be (barring a power ball win) beyond my means.

I am not  potential customer (unfortunately) but I think the front end is ugly as sin. Distinctive is one thing. Repulsive is something else! Can't they make an EV that looks like a normal car?

Agree. Its not the new normal. If Rivian is cool, feature-wise, why is there a need to make it so "distinctive" ? It should stand on its own feet. Doesnt need to be like the next ute, but its a bit weird.

The thing with EV manufacturers is they've actually got a chance to re-invent the wheel (in a way) with a ground up build without the need of a dinosaur fuel engine or anything like that. The other problem with EV manufacturers is the fact they often re-use the shell of a dinosaur fuel vehicle to enter the EV market or the software the car runs is just ripped out from cars that run on dinosaur fuel with added features because it is an EV (think - Ford with their new mustang which for some reason lists all gas stations still on the map inside the car).

Just because a car has been that way forever in terms of design doesn't mean it has to stay like that. That is personally why I drive a Tesla (and not another EV) and think the Cybertruck is awesome looking but many others would even think they all look like EV's. With any car, you either love them or hate them and I for one also love the Rivian for trying to re-invent the Ute.

There will be a tipping point just like the iPhone back in 2007 where everyone will agree on a standard design and things will move on from there. Rivian and Tesla may not have this mastered yet but there is still plenty of innovation to be had and I fully support companies trying different things that may well be jarring.
