Sorry to hijack but @batman what would you buy for $1000-1200. Weight is something I care about since I have a bad Shoulder and Back and the bikes are on the wall. I am 177cm

I expect their weights to be about 12.5kg-13kg.

I suggest you install a bike pulley storage system.

I took another look at the silverback comp you linked and I may have slightly misled you. The componentry is slightly suspicious for a "real" mountain bike. I doubt you are planning to do any "real" mountain biking, but apart from that, the listed specs are head and shoulders above the other 2 you linked.

Do you think you could ask the guy to weigh the bike? I'm interested in how much it weighs. I expect it to weigh 13kg.

@batman no problem. There wont be much if any proper off roading use, mostly alongside the kids on the streets in the pneighbourhood as they practice getting roadsmart and down the bridal track here by the river which has a couple areas of non-mountainous dirt tracks. But thanks for the update regarding the componentry, and if I manage to get to wellington this weekend I will definitely get it weighed and feed that back. Thanks

Don’t forget a gel seat for your backside, getting back into biking took me months to get over the sore backside part

And ordered the strata comp online..... too busy this weekend to get down so after having a play on a coupke random bikes here decided to just risk it and order online from evo. Should be here later this week so can update then. Cheers

Bike arrived yesterday and after putting the front wheel etc on and having a quick play (it was dark and I have no lights so couldn’t go for a decent ride) it seems quite good. It came already setup by the store so I just had to connect a couple bits and it was all set.
@batman it Weighs bugger all compared to what I’m used to with a bike, the box said total weight of 14.6 kg but minus the box, packaging and other assorted crap that came with it I would estimate it weighing in the 13.5 kg region.

By the sounds of it, you are after a commuter bike rather than a mountain bike.

Haha. I have had two of these, the second one is being returned next week.

Weight is 15.8kg (M, with pedals). Could be euphemistically referred to as "solid".

Componentry isn't stellar but the price is remarkable, so what do you expect? Has a dropper seatpost, air fork and midfat tyres for under $1000. It is still better value than anything else at that price point and gets around easy tracks and steep downhill just fine. Its a pretty decent recreational MTB. Upgrade the seat and you have a fairly comfortable bike.

HOWEVER I would strongly recommend anyone reading this who owns a Silverback, and in particular a Slade Comp (Medium) to check their wheel alignment; do not be surprised if the head tube is ~1.5° misaligned.
