Yup. Any halfway-competent app developer should be able to whip up an app that looks a lot like the real thing. Not good enough to fool a cop who can link back to the official drivers' licensing database, but good enough for most anything else.

One of the important features of our existing Driver's Licence is that the card is quite difficult to fake without expensive hardware. An app UI, not so much

This is not true. You do not have to carry your paper licence, just the card.

Brazil has a same system for their DL and also their National ID. It's a good way to go seeing as most people have their phone on them most of the time.
But you will still need the physical ID as well in the event you get pulled over.

And you can just imagine their reaction if you waved your phone at them. "I need to photocopy your license, so I'll just take your unlocked phone away out of your sight and stick it in the copier. Of course that's all I'll do, I'm a low-salary bank teller and who could ask for more reliable and honest than that?"

The privacy implications are horrifying

I'd imagine a licence app would have ability to share/send an electronic copy, so no need to take the phone away anywhere.

That's probably the big take away there: small wins.

Not gonna lie, its a cool idea, but I would much rather the Government (who have a pretty spotty history with large scale IT projects as is) spend my tax dollars on bigger issues like roading, housing, climate change etc than make my life slightly more convenient. Once they have solved those, go nuts.

And this is coming from someone who loathes having to carry a wallet because of the physical items I replace with digital counterparts.

A couple of states in Oz have been trialing this recently (as mentioned). One of the features I saw was the ability to scan a barcode from another phone using the app to verify the licence. There was some animation built in so you could also check it was live and not a screenshot. Done right, this would be very useful.

I'd love to get to a point where the only thing I needed to carry was my phone. I have managed to get my wallet down to just 1) drivers licence 2) work building pass 3) work credit card (doesn't let me do phone based NFC on corporate card account) 4) personal credit card (just as a backup in case phone NFC failed for some reason).

Well, you did until 2015, since their introduction whenever that was. So I was right for about 15 years
