Today the driver licence turned digital in Norway. Licence holders are able to download the driver licence app to their iOS and Android phones.

I wonder how long it will be before the New Zealand driver licence will turn digital.

Edit: Here is an article about the new digital driver licence. (Google translated)

Then you better have your regular driver licence.

wonder how long it will be before the New Zealand driver licence will turn digital.

Friggin ages,

Australia have been heading down this path for a while, but there appears to be little interest in NZ

https://tottnews.com/2018/10/23/australias-rapid-shift-to-digital-identification-and-licenses/

I suspect there are lots of big behind the scenes arguments that likely involve DIA insisting that it be based around "RealME" ,

Which even after hundreds of millions being pours into it, still appears to be a solution looking for problems with lots of Govt departments refusing to use it...... looking at you IRD...

I'd imagine privacy advocates would be wailing good and loud about this too.

Ha ha. Stolen phones are an issue as well - @jarledb have you seen any info on what they're doing in terms of data/app security?

dont know why you just cant get a QR code for your license, then authorized parties can scan it in their own app and pull up your details.

i have had a licence for 40 odd years and i can count on one hand how many times i have had to show it , and what is easier than just showing your licence.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

A bit better than the UK, where the old-fashioned folded-A4-piece of paper licence was replaced with a nice card.... but then you had to also carry the new, folded A4 paper counterpart all the time.

Well if you're own car and don't have a car charger... And if you're not in your own car how often have you been asked to provide your licence?
I'm in rentals half the month and always have a car charger with me.

I think I've been asked for my licence as ID at bank or similar about 100x more often than I've been asked for it by a police officer

Instead of a QR code you'll stick your thumb on the nice officer's iPhone and he'll be told all about you.

If banks can provide full banking services via mobile with all the security requirements that entails, a digital drivers licence should be reasonably straightforward to implement. Nice one Norway.

And you can just imagine their reaction if you waved your phone at them. "I need to photocopy your license, so I'll just take your unlocked phone away out of your sight and stick it in the copier. Of course that's all I'll do, I'm a low-salary bank teller and who could ask for more reliable and honest than that?"

The privacy implications are horrifying
