Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
chevrolux: Urgh... why waste your time doing anything.
Take the modern approach, name and shame for rubbish work. Leave it at that.
Well naming and shaming is "doing something" no?
I just wanted to have more information before going off half-cocked on a topic that I don't know very much about!
That said - I think I am comfortable calling them out now at the very least:
Tony's Tyres New Lynn - I am not impressed...
Item: ^
That is the other thing. These are low profile higher pressure tyres, so presumably the danger is even higher?
It is usually mitigated by having more rigid reinforced sidewalls on lower profile tires. But as in your case, if it goes deep enough the tyre is a write-off
IMO the OP's photo of the damage looks like it would be passable as the innner steel or sidewall cords are not exposed (as far as i can tell by the photos)
The other poster's image of their sidewall damage was clearly a fail.

That's @K8Toledo you are thinking of, that damage is superficial.
Although that tyre does look like it is getting pretty thin along the outer shoulder of the tread, but its hard to be sure from the photos.

I think you have the photos and their owners the wrong way around!
Sorry yes Absolutely...my bad.. In this case your tyre shop has fobbed you off in the worst way.. and put you at risk.
The tyre is clearly damaged beyond was would be accepted for WOF standard and should have been replaced if your damage warranty covered that type of event.
ShinyChrome:Yep good spotting... shoulder wear is mostly due to the 3rd world roads we have up here in Northland, also they've done 45,000K ..

I have another pair of PS4's waiting to go on...if only I could find that elusive lock nut.... lol
Item: So far I trust Cooper's - they have been very good when I have used them and I would have used them this time but they couldn't get close to the price that Tony's did for the specific tyres I wanted.. .If you're not far from Rosebank Rd I can highly recommend Tyre Warehouse.
I guess I got what a paid for!

Old habits something something... Sounds about right, Manawatu is about the same. 45k is a good turn though.
PS4s are the sh!t; I was tossing up between those and the Primacy's, ended up going for the latter since it had a slightly harder compound because aforementioned crappy roads. 30k later and they are only about half-worn.
Lock nut? Don't you mean the hissing blue spanner of doom?
