RobDickinson:

If the EV version is cheaper to buy, requires less maintenance, cheaper to run, you can drive it more places (we already have seen ULEZ zones in cities etc), and likely faster (and fast charging is pretty much sorted), who is going to buy a petrol or diesel car?

Understood - and absolutely agree.  We're a long way from the point where the numbers add up for EVs just now, but the ICE vs EV will be an easy decision for all but the die-hard ICE enthusiasts once the numbers make sense.  I recently bought a new ICE car and with an expectation to keep it for around 4 years will be surprised if I buy another one after that.

Despite what people say, for most the decision is 99% based on value for money

We're not far off it now. 2023 mebe. It should already be there or close in places like Europe but the manufacturers are pricing the EVs higher, this isnt now due to cell cost. The EV variant is £10k+ more for no apparent reason.

In NZ the model 3 is now (with subsidy) $12k cheaper to buy than the equivalent slower more expensive to run German Auto and sales are showing it.

Tesla vs a German Auto isn't the same, but if you had one brand and model with an ICE and EV version, thats what people will relate to

We already have that in a few examples, like the GLA and EQA, the EQA is actually a touch cheaper

So are you discussing EVs, or RUCs?

Ok back to the topic, the end date is odd wonder why they chose that in particular esp when there is already an end date for heavy EVs of December 31st 2025

Because the present flavour of Govt prefers the stick to the carrot. They need to make it very temporary because the party faithful would be loosing a lot of sleep over foregoing any taxation and giving any kind of free ride to any non-minority or anyone outside of the bottom tax bracket.

Outside of the executive branch, our bureaucrats are seeking "the" single solution to increasing EV uptake, so if this isn't working they can cancel it and try some other singular solution. We can't possibly have a suite of small encouragements (like T2 lane & parking privileges, reduced registration, toll road discounts, fringe benefit tax etc) because that is waaay to complex to understand and you won't know which Govt dept (singular) deserves all of the credit.

Exemption from RUC is a carrot, no? The question is why end it on that date, why not the end of 2023 or 2024 etc?

A bunch of years ago we had EV stickers and T2 lane privileges etc, they are of very limited use and didnt end up being an incentive at all.

... and as this carrot goes against their principles the compromise is to make it short term, not 2035 or when a certain threshold of EV's on the road is met etc.

Yeap I had that sticker, and the letter notifying cancellation of this privilege said the reason for cancellation was that the T2 privilege was not working to increased EV uptake sufficiently - it wasn't "the" end-all-be-all solution to EV up take. Auckland Transport (or Transit or whomever it was) wasn't going to get all the credit, so killed the scheme.

Theres more stick and more carrot (if they want either), I guess if the uptake isnt going as well as hopped they continue the RUC exemption for longer.

TBH waiting this long (less than 6 months until the end) before extending it isnt good for anyone.

It was a still born idea because Auckland Transport opposed it, and they control and refused to allow it on most of the T2 lanes in Auckland.

it was run by NZTA (who control the State highways/motorway) and they were forced to run the trial basically only on motorway onramps...

So with such a limited role out surprise surprise it was a major fail..

Agree. With the prospect of RUC in the <3.5t class I was starting to eye up hybrids because they were going to be cheaper to run than my Leaf - also when weighing up a battery replacement (for the 70% SoH Leaf) vs nice new hybrid, the RUC's blow it firmly in favour of the hybrid.

They really need to create a sub 1,500 kg RUC/non-ute/non-truck class. Seems daft for a li'ol EV (and light diesel cars) to pay the same RUC as a commercial truck.

I guess it is based on drivers licence classifications?
