Batman:

i would have thought a recent model jap would be superior in features, safety and build but i could be wrong.

I get where youre coming from. It may have been the case a few years back but the Chinese segement is vastly improved on these things - especially safety, most of them have 5 star ANCAP ratings.

Here are some of the advanced safety bits from the spec sheet for the Jolion - this is all standard too BTW

  • Reverse camera + sensors
  • Lane Departure Warning + Lane Keep Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Lane Change Assist / Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Camera-based Driver Fatigue Monitoring system

I dont think you would see half of those features on a 3-4 year old import.

Heres the full list

with most low mileage japs you don't need the warranty.

i would have thought a recent model jap would be superior in features, safety and build but i could be wrong.

but one needs to compare what one is buying

if the H2 has better features and specs than used jap and as safe or safer then yeah go for it

5 Star ANCAP and every conceivable bell and whistle - including tyre pressure monitoring etc...along with 5 year servicing, warranty and roadside assist.

i actually watched a video of the crash test (chinese) and the side impact was the best i've ever seen any car. the side of the car is a wall!

Specifications are not the whole story. Marques like Landrover, Mercedes, BMW and Audi are chock full of all the gadgets and latest specs but year after year the all feature very prominently at the bottom quintile for reliability etc. I have no doubts about the Chinese engineering expertise and their motor vehicle industry is improving with quantum leaps

every year and their designs are in my view outstripping most of the competition.  Before laying down one hard earned a look through Canstar, JD Power etc would be prudent.

This is relevant if you plan or happen to own one outside of warranty period

If you are set on brand new then perhaps the Haval is unbeatable on value, but I'd take a look at test driving the Renault Koleos, a 1 Year old 18 month model would be similar money and they are really quite something for that kind of money.

Here is an Aussie article aussie article about the H2 runout:

https://www.caradvice.com.au/931967/2021-haval-jolion-to-replace-h2-as-the-companys-entry-level-suv/

Run-outs can be viewed two ways. Either the last change to get it, and a chance to snap up a bargen, or buying an obsolete model depending on your perspective.

Haven't been in a Haval of any type, but a few things stand out on the specs:

- 133mm ground clearance (for comparison a corolla hatch is 135mm).

- Full size spare (rare feature in this class)

-Fuel consumption rated at 9.0L/100km of 95Ron is really really high for a vehicle of this size. Journalist of the below review got 11.2 on test.

For comparison I have a 2006 Lexus RX400h. It substantially larger than the H2, and is over 2000kg (empty) or plush leather seats & sound deadening. It makes 200kW, and is AWD. It's rated at 8.1L/100km, and unless I tow something really big, dash reported fuel consumption sits at around 8.5 - 9.2L/100km depite a harsh urban running pattern...

Have you test driven it? Journalist at the below complained about really bad turbo lag, and said it struggled up hills compared to it's peers (a surprise given the 110kW engine)

https://www.carsguide.com.au/car-reviews/haval-h2-66869

Personally to me (ignoring my ethical preference to buy non china stuff where viable alternatives exist) the fuel consumption alone would be a deal breaker for me.

Lets say you get the journalists fuel consumption of 11.2L/100km, and 95 Ron is $2.50 a liter.

Over 100,000km this is a fuel bill of $28,000

Over the say 300,000km life of the vehicle its $84,000

And petrol prices are likely to trend up as we emerge from the pandemic, and the ETS carbon price trends up. Seems like false economy to buy this cheap car, and pay through the nose for fuel for the rest of your ownership. High fuel consumption is also going to make it unattractive as used car so deprecation will be high.

Spending an extra $11k to get something like a Vitara Turbo would seem to pay itself back in fuel savings in just over 100,000km... For comparison it makes 103kW, and used 5.9L/100km of 95 Ron.

A left field suggestion is to take a look at the MG ZS EV. $40,365 +ORC after the EV rebate. One of my extended family member has one and is really happy with it. (just don't expect Japanese build quality). Its about the same size as the H2, 105kW (and EV's feel more powerful than the kW rating suggests), 263km WLTP rated range, and a liquid cooled battery pack (should last a long time).

Obviously the EV would require you have an driving pattern that is suitable for the EV's range, without spending excessive time at a fast charger, off street parking at home where you can charge it etc. But if you have access to funds to cover the higher outlay, the payback on fuel savings vs the H2 would be about 100,000km.

@handsomedan where do you live? The father in law has just bought a 2019 H2 and is impressed with it and my wife and I just bought the MG ZS EV. Happy to show you the cars if you're nearby?

In my experience with them - which as a some-time user of one, not an owner - the build quality is better than I expected, feature level is good, but in terms of mechanical / capability they are a bit behind the more established brands. We compared the H2 to the Suzuki Vitara Turbo when looking at small SUV options, and while the H2 has a few extra features, the Vitara drives better (in terms of engine performance), and is far more economical (rated at 6.2L/100km for the Vitara vs 9.0L/100km for the H2) despite both being relatively low-displacement turbo engines that want 95RON. That said, it sounds like there may be a larger purchase price gap now with runout deals on the H2, which could offset this (the Vitara was about $4k more when we compared, with pricing and offers that were in play then, looks like the gap is more like $10k now).

Suzukis are oustanding IMHO. Cheapest Vitara Turbo is $34K+ORC so yes, 10K difference. If they were the same price I would go with the Suzuki.

We've owned several (new and used Suzukis) and they are amazingly reliable.

Our other car is a VItara (current shape but first iteration, so 5 years old). Its a great SUV but the legroom in the back is very limited.

it depends. depends if you want/need the stuff of the next model. if you do it's obsolete if you only save $2k on a $60k car. if you don't it's a bargain if it's heavily discounted eg $2k on a $25k car is a lot.

forking out an extra $11k on a $23k car is a lot just to save fuel
