$80k? Isn't the price of an X ~$190,000?

This video triggered some awful memories from an incident I had a few years ago.

I was driving with my 4 year old son through the shops when some guy screamed up beside me on the wrong side of the road and forced me onto the curb and boxed me in.  He jumped out and started screaming at me and accusing me of some imagined poor driving I'd done to him somewhere and how I'd put his baby at risk.

The back door of his car opens to reveal a very young girl cradling a tiny infant, neither of them strapped in whatsoever, and she started flipping gang hand signs at me.

After I wouldn't get out (i haven't fought a soul in my life) he starts trying to punch through my window.  All I can do is just repeatedly say i'm sorry for whatever i did and that I wont do it again, all the while trying to unbuckle my sons car seat straps while i'm in the front seat so that if the guy did manage to get in i would have a chance to get him out of the car seat somehow and out a door so he could run away.  It was so hard to try and stay calm for my son while being absolutely terrified inside.

Eventually he got bored I guess and went back to his car, and roared away, the whole time on the wrong side of the road.

I imagine the Tesla owner was probably feeling similar.  Yuck.

scuwp:

Tesla tax.

I take the repair costs with a grain of salt.  You can buy a new one for $80K so any insurance company would consider this a write off.

It's a Model X so the starting price is around $190k...plus you can't actually get a new one until sometime after mid-next year while they roll out the refresh.

He probably paid $230k or more for that.

And surprisingly it costs more to repair a car than it does to build it (on a percentage bases) because having to strip down, order parts, build it up and paint it all as a one off isnt quite as efficient.

I assume it was just voiced for an American audience who would get really confused with the correct number.

I thought the exact same thing, that the real details have to be simplified or "Americanized" (note with the z).

Well the offending vehicle has just had a towing company post a notice of payment or forfeiture yesterday.

I don't think insurance company will be getting any recompense.

The offender just multiplied their troubles with more convictions.
Though I do wonder about our justice system after a case of road rage discharge of firearm was reduced to home detention on appeal.

As we all have experienced home detention is no big deal, and the level of violence courts will now permit is worrying.

Yes could happen to anyone, I've had my moments in South Auckland and other parts of NZ over the years,
fortunately they stopped at a few terrifying antics.
But for luck it could be any of us.

In the YT comments the Tesla owner posted that surprisingly both vehicles were covered by insurance policies.

When you talk of the offender multiplying their troubles do you know that these separate cases are related?

Bung,

Oh yes error in formatting, can't seem to edit again, they are different people and cases.
The potential offender in Tesla case made things worse by not stopping at the usual shouting insults and hand waving.
i did not mean they made things worse by being involvement in another case.

Second case was just illustration that going to court may not be much disincentive given sentences.

This really highlights the importance of locking your doors while driving. Most modern cars can even be configured to do it automatically.

car alarms ex South Africa do it.   An old one I had it used to do that after the 2nd brake press.

NZ laws are OK

Its the political pressure to not send offenders to jail.
Judges have political pressure to not jail offenders .
Scum know they often wont get jail time .

Jails dont work , but it does keep these people out of society .
My neighbors kept stealing cars while on bail
