I second the leaf.

Recently got one and it's life changing. When I commute I do similar, 60 k's and my leaf does 90 or so (older and cheaper than yours).

Plug in takes 2 secs at home, easy as. Range anxiety only kicked it when I went further out to pukekohe one time and I decided to top up at a charger there.

Honestly - it's amazing, and for your money you can get one with double the range I have, so way less to worry about (not that there is ever really a worry).

I help a lot of Car Dealers and private customers to change language to English on various Japanese imports , Axela included. That car is very popular among all genders / generations and I have never seen a teenager in Axela as someone suggested.
25k will buy you various fresh imports for which I have developed conversions to English already, e.g. Honda Vezel Hybrid (circa 2014-2015), Hnda FIT hybrid, Honda Grace Hybrid, Toyota Aqua Hybrid (2017-2019), Toyota Sienta Hybrid 2018-2019, Vitz Hybrid, Axio/Fielder Hybrid 2016, Crown Hybrid,

There is also a 1999 Toyota Lancruiser Limited edition for sale (family member selling) in a very good condition with WOF and Rego till June 2022 for about 16k

P.S. As for the Leaf some people suggested - I convert 30 and 40 kWh to English too.

Thanks all, points on an EV noted. Getting slightly off topic, but I've just noticed that the Leafs (within my budget) aren't 5 star safety rated? Am I missing something? That's one of the non-negioables with the boss.. I also don't think she's  a fan of the look of the leaf either. Is there another EV option for my budget?

But back on topic, anyone else care to share their stories on a recent purchase?

Dealer gave us $800 off a 2017 i30 Hyundai. We also got more than I expected for our trade-in. I don't think we got a bargain but we were happy.

The Hyundai Ioniq has a 5 star safety rating. It has a Hybrid and Plug In Hybrid option so make sure you're looking at the BEV version - there are a number on Trade Me around your budget.

Depending on the particular dealer, their salespeople may have targets to be met. Monthly, quarterly and annual so there is a chance December may be all three. In the past I have had luck where targets are yet to be achieved.

This year may be different though. Unusual stock levels, strange liquidity levels and even a bit of FOMO going on. With new vehicle waiting times of almost a year in some circumstances customers may be doing deals and then having to hold onto their trade-ins for an extended period. So no rollover stock.

Dealers have three options to screw you over

- purchase price
- trade in
- finance

It's normally best to:

- sell the vehicle yourself privately or to a different yard than you're buying from.
- organise your own finance (if you need finance).
- negotiate the price with the dealer pretending you'll be taking their finance option, then last minute switch to a cash sale. They'll be willing to go far lower if they think they'll be winning on points 1 and 2.

The salesperson recognised us as a buyer he wasn't able to out negotiate from years prior, and was mortified we got him a second time. Got various minor paint defects fixed and 15% off a 21K car that was worth more.

Thanks insane - interesting point re finance, something I sorta picked up from that post I linked in the OP.

Won't be offering a trade in with this purchase, so will try the finance tactic and see how we get on..

This is extremely good advice. The last point I have now heard multiple times and kicking myself a bit I didn't try it on....

I got the advice straight from Mark Cadogan from Auto Expert on YouTube.

An Australian perspective but seems to be applicable here.

So does one just say "what's your best price for this vehicle if I get this on finance" or do you just try and negotiate the price down first then bring out the finance card?

When I walked into the dealer the first thing the sales guy said was "cash or finance" so he could judge what deal he would offer I guess......

hehe smart fella, I'd just answer the one that's going to cost me the least overall and throw it back at him.

My sales guy just assumed I guess that we were going to need finance, never came up in conversation until numbers were being bounced back and fourth. Guy probably looked at my wife's older car I used to drive there and how I dressed on the day and thought there's no way he's paying cash :D

Re: "what's your best price"... I hear those words rarely and only from certain category of bargain seekers.. Certain cultural habit, I guess.
One of my clients, who is a car dealer, usually responds to that question with: "uber driver, right?" :) He also told me that those, who ask that question are rarely buying anything. Just window shoppers, tyre kickers.
Re: finance. Some companies bring in rubbish cars and sell them with near zero margin, making money on finance only. Those would never add any extra value to the car before sales.
Some dealers own their yards, they do not pay rent, they import cars using their own capital and although they could, they would not drop their prices. One friendly dealer told me, quote: "we do not give quality cars away"...
Some yards are buying cars on borrowed money and have very little margins and their window to negotiate price is quite small. They need to have fast turnaround to be afloat. Those usually short of cash...So they may be willing to discount,,but they cannot...
So all car dealers are different. Car conditions are different. It is a wrong focus to try to hunt for "discount". . and disturb every car dealer with that annoying question...
You have to decide which car and how much you prepared to spend and then try to find who will sell for that price...
P.S. I respect those clients who honestly telling me that the quoted price is high for them and their budget is that much....
Those who ask for the "best price" would not get a penny out of me.
