This is a big win, for purchases of 95 RON (or higher) fuel, like me. The dropping of higher octane fuel from price boards seemed to coincide with a big jump in the price premium. So more visibility of the price is very desirable.

With increasing numbers of vehicles requiring premium fuel it would be good for the margin taken on it to drop into line with 91RON. Noting that many vehicles require fuel in the name of reduced emissions, rather than increased performance, like the Suzuki swift hybrid. Some markets like the EU have dropped 91RON all together.

Did sadly miss the opportunity to require fuel retailers to list prices online in a scrape-able format. This would be much better for promoting competition (and probiably cheaper to implement) than a roadside price board.

Dingbatt: Perhaps they can explain the difference in price between 91 and 95. It used to be 12c, recently the worst I have seen 35c.

THIS !

91 to 98 differential is 45 cents down here in ChCh.

daylight robbery espcially when 18 year ago when it first came out.....the differential was less than 20cents and you couldnt buy it everywhere.

Nowdays its nearly at every station....yad think costs would have come down since but nope..... its a cash cow fuel type.

I thought it was odd the unmanned mckeowns nearby had some near cardboard looking prices on the sign last night

Going to be a pita to get someone to go change them when they can fluctuate twice in a day to match z sometimes.

At least with remote control they could just push it and rely on gaspy users to keep others updated

Pointless gesturing from a powerless government. It will make absolutey zip difference to prices. If people were really interested there were already good options like Gaspy.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Can't see it changing much. The market has changed, they know they can get away with a massive 91/95/98 differential now and people just have to keep buying petrol.

It will make a difference. Many people with phones don't use phone apps at all.

I'd imagine most people for whom price matters are already using a 91 vehicle anyway. So it's a clever way of market segmenting IMHO.

When I see comments like this on Geekzone I am reminded of the nature of this audience.

A comment like this doesn't really apply to a good chunk of the population who aren't, and don't care to be, driven by 'smarts' and 'apps'. Though well represented in the Boomer generation they exist all across demographics and generations (though perhaps are more highly represented in the older generation). I guarantee you that there are plenty of people who will appreciate a simple, reasonable, common baseline like this.

Basically, don't assume that everyone's like you (or us). Geekzone is a very specific population demographic.

Heck. I don't run Gaspy myself, because I drive by several gas stations regularly and am quite capable of reading on what's on their signs... and i'm not going to cross town to save a few cents per litre, the gas consumed + time cost is not worth it to me (as yet).

There's a number of market studies from Europe showing price transparency in the fuel market reduces retail margins by 10-20%.

If I had a 95 fuel needed car would appreciate price being displayed outside pump.

I’ve always checked what car uses, and to date found a car happy with that uses 91.

Gaspy needs people to enter the price, if people can see price when drive by, should lead to more updates.

Most petrol stations have added more signs, which means the discount price is still being displayed for 91, at the top.

For some reason I’d rather it not be there, just the actual amount of discount if signed up for qualifying service, not the final price it makes it so end up with two prices for same fuel being displayed.

The catch is, new eco cars everyone markets tend to roll 95/98

3 cylinder turbo eco boost range from ford, suzuki etc

Conventionally, got popular when the gap between grades shot up from the 9c once upon a time.

I'd say it's more am engine thing rather than fuel conspiracy. Higher compression engines want higher octane.

Small turbo engines are the only way to keep under tightening emissions.

Misunderstood. I mean the price increase is convenient.

An increase in demand for the higher octane supplies that come with new vehicles, Suddenly it costs more to refine from the same raw material 91 had been derived from too. despite being a reasonably constant 5-9c different for the past 20 or so years. suddenly it's nearly 4x that to produce 95 over 91.

On engines, automakers are under pressure across the board to improve economy / reduce emissions. The latter being especially important in jurisdictions that tax new cars based on their emissions profile, or fine automakers for not meeting a fleet average max emissions level (NZ getting into the latter camp in a few years with the clean car standard).

Easy win to improve efficiency is to crank up the compression ratio, requiring higher octane fuel.

So the old association of high octane fuel with premium and high performance cars is going out the window.

The likes of the suzuki swift hybrid, Base 70kW VW polo both require 95RON fuel.

And of course 91 hasn't been sold in the EU for a few years now, so most automakers have a catalog of 95RON minimum optimized engines configurations that they can easily sell into non euro markets, if the marketing team thinks it is a good idea.

Pretty sure the increased differntial is just higher margins being taken on higher octane grades.

Discount operators seem to run fine with a small differential.

Source gaspy croudsourcing:

Allied Maramura:

  • 91RON: 255.9c
  • 95RON: 259.9c

Gull Hampton downs:

  • 91RON: 253.7c
  • 95RON: 263.7c

And should note that the entire of the EU ditched 91RON some years back, current minimum is 95RON, so clearly there isn't too much of an issue setting up refineries to produce more of the latter.

Yeah. So backing me up. We're being screwed if you need 95 for no reason.

The sarcasm about costing more to refine suddenly was also lost it seems

Most the z down here, 2.57/2.73 (or when they scaled back to match nearby .55/.71)
