Ok, not post 2012, but maybe you could find one of these -

OMG, I had the earlier version! The later model seems to have lost that styling flair synonymous with Citroen cars.

*No, I didn't own one, but I so badly want to. I think there was only 1 built anyway - this is a prototype Michelin tyres testbed with a second engine driving a single wheel situated in the middle of the rear. Whatever, I can't get this thing fitted with roof racks & surfboards out of my mind.

Looks like it escaped from a French version of Thunderbirds.

I've always lusted after a CX, but the closest I've ever got was a test drive in a CX Prestige (lwb). It was heaven.

This would probably be my DS rival -

Mazda CX-5 has a good sized boot, just over 500L and a LOT more with the back seats down.

I have a tidy one for sale on TradeMe for under $25K

Funny you should say that, my wife has just been offered one as a company car.  That or the Mitsubishi ASX (and a bit of cash).

How do you find it? (at risk of derailing)

It's actually 438 litres. I have a CX-5 and the luggage space is decent but I wouldn't say it's huge.

I have a CX-5 and I would definitely recommend it over the aging ASX. The CX-5 is bigger, handles better and is more refined.

My only complaint with the CX-5 is the horrible entertainment system which usually requires some fumbling around to get Carplay working every time I get in the car. This may not necessarily be a problem for you because some variants of the latest facelift have an overhauled entertainment system.

What is the length and area? I see a lot of SUVs and other upright formats trying to sell cargo space by volume when the floor area is more important to me. Was not a fan of Toyota dropping the Camry wagon and steering people to the Highlander as a replacement.

Not sure which version you have but my 2013 is 503L. Maybe you have the 4WD that eats into the boot space. It's one of the reasons I bought it over many other SUVs we tested

It's really good, we got a fully loaded XD L model, so above all the extra safety features, sensors, big wheels, Bose audio, cameras, leather seats etc it most importantly has a non CVT gearbox. Good ol torque converter planetary automatic so it's fairly responsive. The 2.0L petrol we tested was a bit under powered but the 2.5petrol or the 2.2 diesel both have plenty of up and go.

Only the VW Tiguan drove better, but the bigger boot of the CX-5 clinched it.

As for the entertainment unit, just swapped it for a Sony with Android Auto & Apple carplay.

Yes, mine's a 2019 GSX AWD. It's really interesting that the older FWD ones had larger cargo capacity.

Any of the Holden Commodores built after that time have pretty prodigious boots and if you need more space than the sedan boot provides the wagons are a decent size.. The same probably applies to the same era Ford Falcons.

xpd:

Why is it, anything built 2012 onwards, have no real boot space anymore unless you want to pay for the top end model ?

We currently have a 2010 Mazda Premacy, has decent sized boot, so can pack a few bags and the dog.

Thinking about upgrading to something similar thats newer, but does not seem to exist except for high end models - $25K+ for secondhand.

Even so called "SUV"'s now all have tiny little angled boot spaces, which the dog will not be happy with.

What happened to all the classic station wagons ? Even those classed as SW's have stupid angled rears on them, restricting usage.

Best thing I've found so far, is probably around 2012-15 Volvo V50's.

I’m a bit confused because:
You’re expect wagons to be like MPVs and other van-like vehicles with near vertical rear doors.
You can’t find station wagons with more boot-space than a Volvo V50 - my small hatch is only 10% smaller.
You’re (you both) rejecting the most obvious models without actually comparing them in detail, i.e. Subaru wagons.
You don’t specify how much space you actually need - also knowing that overall boot space isn’t much use if other requirements aren’t met for floor-space and head-space.

At not much more than 400 litres of boot-space the Volvo V50 is probably the Volvo wagon with the least boot space in this century. Volvo wagons before it and after it are at least 20% bigger. It only has the boot space of a roomy hatchback… literally.

The 2010-15 Premacy has boot-space in the low 400 litre range with two rows up. It was also a model which shrank the boot space from the previous range: the earlier Premacy was closer to 500 litres. So what do you actually need?

The suggestions for non-Euro options have been pretty good. I can say that the Camry wagon and Subaru wagons are great for actually carrying dogs. In the USA, Subaru is considered to be the most dog-friendly brand because they realised that’s what their cars were being used for so they advertise to pet owners. You should consider them if you want to carry a dog. Subaru boots are often squarer in shape and entry. Accessories like trays and barriers for dogs seem to be easy to find overseas. Subaru also keep getting accolades for improving safety.

As to price, perhaps the reason you can’t find something is that you’re looking for low mileage or something you haven’t mentioned like only NZ-new. We just bought a 2017 hatch, with 380 litre boot, a few months ago and we were looking at options for space so we saw many hatchbacks with boots larger than 400 litres and quite a few station wagons around 500 litres, and almost all were within our sub-$25K price range or negotiable into that range: I can remember seeing Holden, Ford, Subaru, VW, Hyundai, Audi options. We certainly didn’t have to consider SUVs to find something that could suit you. That was in Wellington where prices are higher than in Auckland and Christchurch so you might be able to do better in your location.

We got a RAV4 essentially because of the boot space. 550L and wide enough that we can leave our (large) stroller in there full time and still have room for a few suitcases or a full grocery shop. Looks like the current model is even bigger at 580L. Prices are certainly completely nuts right now though - I see a 2019 model with 40k on the clock is selling for more than we paid brand new.
