Interesting thread. I'm also getting a rattle from my Toyota Yaris, which is about eight months old at this point. Like above, it's only noticeable on bumpy roads like the cheap seal they put down these days. You've given me a few things to check!

Our 3 year old  mazda 3 has developed a rattle but it isn't enough to bother me too much. Our toyota rav 4 also had a rattle when new and we did get them to look at it but they never solved it fully. They stuffed some rags into one of the cavities under the plastic in the back on one occiasion, as it was likely plastic on plastic rubbing. . .

Hey Team,

Thought I would provide an update on this one - turns on the rear rattle was due to plastic rubbing against each other - once I put some lubrication on the rubber it stopped completely.

I now have a metallic/humming noise that sounds like it is resonating from the drivers door - any ideas?

Linux: Front wheel bearing maybe

Possibly - would be odd sounds more like something in the door - it doesn't always do it only on a courser type road

After near driving myself insane rattle-chasing in cars over the last n years, I have come to the conclusion that a zen approach is best.

  1. You are *always* going to get rattles. New car or old. Luxury or budget. calibrating your tolerance appropriately is key!
  2. These are going to be exacerbated or revealed by NZ roads. Bumpy roads and the particular rattle-inducing vibration caused by rough surfaces are inevitable.
  3. You are going to be able to find some, but not all
  4. You are going to be able to fix some, but not all
  5. Felt tape can work wonders when you have plastic surfaces or two loose/semi-loose objects vibrating or rattling
  6. Be reasonable with your dealer! There are sounds which indicate something important is loose or damaged and there are general squeaks, clicks and interior rattles. Push hard on the former and enquire politely about the latter!
  7. If you identify a rattle or buzz inside the dashboard, I would learn to live with it. Taking it apart (or making the dealer take it apart) to chase a rattle almost certainly creates 2 new ones in the process.

mate has a new BMW costs 6 figures with a rattle, so anycar can have it as far as I'm concerned.

but doesn't mean it's not annoying, did they find out what it was?

My car ( not a BMW) had an annoying rattle in the dash which slowly got worse. It was annoying rather than loud. I mentioned it at the last service.

When I picked the car up I was told there was a Service Bulletin about it and they'd fixed it. I was sceptical, but it is fixed.
