Love our 2019 Sportage LX+ Diesel.  Drives beautifully, 8 speed transmission is silky smooth, and grunt for miles, not to mention a 2 tonne towing capacity.  Didn't really know much about Kia when we brought it, but super impressed with the build and general quality and features.  We got the running boards (looks cool and give better access to the roof) and threw a roof rack on with a roof box to give us heaps of luggage space.

I know diesel is a bit more expensive now but still economical as you get more miles to the gallon than petrol.  Can't beat the pure grunt of a diesel, this thing can get up and go no problems.  As a fuel it will be around for a while yet, just about the whole country runs on it.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Sportage, but to be honest, I think you would have to pry this one out of my wife's cold dead hands.

I find it surprising that the likes of MG & BYD are being recommended. Would they not all be heaps of puss just waiting to break down in exciting new & expensive ways? I just can't see them being a sensible option, unless you want to constantly upgrade while they are still under warranty.

Sportage should be a good option. I love diesels & own a Sante Fe diesel at the moment, but would have to agree - buying a newer diesel is not sensible, especially anything with a DPF if it's primarily used around town. Hyundai/Kia seem to have a lot of trouble with petrol engines in the states, but you don't seem to hear about so many issues here. Not sure if they are made in the same location, or if they are even the same engines.

The Tucson is the same car as the Sportage - seems the Kia is often slightly cheaper. I reckon the Tucson before the current model is a pretty nice looking vehicle (for a SUV), more so than the Kia. Not sure what your budget is, but maybe something like this

i think it's the 8 year warranty, the kickbacks, but beyond that who knows

The petrol is fine. My folks have a 2020 Sportage 2L petrol. They tow a 5m Cresta Craft with it no issues.

I agree the diesel is the better engine in those vehicles, but is buying a newer diesel that is primarily used around town really a good idea?

The Sportage is a great car in the small/compact SUV segment. If you want to tow something then get the diesel, just be mindful of frequent short trips around town. You will need to take it on a decent motorway trip occasionally to keep the emissions equipment happy. If you don't need to tow then I would highly recomend the 1.6T engine over the 2.0L NA. That 1.6L Petrol engine is a peach, more power, more torque and more efficient than the 2.0L.

My Sportage is petrol, no complaints.

The current Sportage is 4.66 metres long with a 2.75 metre wheelbase. That's not what I would call small/compact.

The Seltos is the small SUV offering.

We have a 2020 LX+ 2.0L Petrol and it’s pretty nice to drive. Certainly prefer it over the RAV4 hybrid and standard variants.

Fuel economy isn’t great - in Auckland peak hour driving it’s currently averaging about 9.6L/100km.

Wow; I’m amazed how many people are willing to still buy brand new ICE cars in this era - especially vehicles that have such poor real-world fuel economy.

Even if a full BEV isn’t perceived as a viable option at this point in time, would an alternative not be to buy s/h and retain only until a BEV becomes feasible?

Currently awaiting an Atto 3 - delivery in December but that’s to replace the other ICE vehicle.

If that goes well the Sportage will hopefully also be replaced in a few years.

Had a really good deal when we bought the Sportage so it was only a few thousand difference between a late model second hand and brand new.

Good for you - that’s also how we did it; replacing my wife’s Jazz a few years back with a Leaf, and this year replacing my Mazda 6 with a Model Y.

Just for clarification, my post wasn’t directed at you, as it’s really only in the last six months that we finally have a decent range of BEVs to choose from, both from a price and size/style perspective, and that’s only going to improve over the next few years. It’s (partially) because of this - and what it will do for the interest in/value of ICE cars - I’d be wary of buying a new ICE.
