SaltyNZ:

Picked up on Saturday. Some niggles with the optionals not being right so they will need to be fixed up. The lane assist is a bit janky, although that was somewhat expected from KiwiEV's review. But my wife is loving it otherwise so far.

Be interesting see your comments in say a months time.  My wife is interested in  one of these after we move to Tauranga in the new year.

I've got the 2021 version and love it. Done over 17,000km with it without any issue other than the occasional reboot of the infotainment system. Mainly used as a daily shopping cart/work transport/around town vehicle for the wife but I have driven it to Napier, Gisborne, New Plymouth and Wellington from Palmerston North and was a more than capable vehicle. Have it in tandem with our v6 Outlander that is used for dump runs, larger family outings and recently, travelling to work for me.

Well, I'm still waiting for some of the optional extras I purchased to arrive, but that doesn't bother me too much. I've had it detailed (ceramic coating and interior cleanup/protection) by an independent operator and am really enjoying driving this car. There are a couple of things that could be a little better.

- Lane assist was a bit twitchy so I switched it off
- Cruise control doesn't like any form of bend in the road, no matter how gentle, and will slow the car down
- Cruise control disables regen braking (although maybe, for technical reasons, this a standard thing across all EV brands?)
- The tablet screen could include some user configurable options, for instance I'd happily reduce the size of the radio in order to be able to increase the size of the tiny time display
- A couple more controls could be available in the smartphone app
- The geofencing part of the app is a complete waste of time as you can only set one location at a time (I want to have one for home and one for work) and its minimum radius is 5km

Overall though, I'm very happy with it.

Biggest recommendation: get a spare wheel!

Was driving home a couple of weeks ago when I hit something on the road that I didn’t see as coming over the brow of a hill.
Almost immediately got the low tyre pressure warning so pulled over when it was safe to do so.
Big gash in the left rear tyre. :(
No way the supplied tyre repair kit was going to fix it.
Had to call MG road side assist and wait for a tow truck.
It was after hours so couldn’t go straight to a tyre shop.
The company (Peter Keown Automotive in Oamaru) that did the towing were awesome.
They were kind enough to provide a curtesy car so my son and I could get home and then get the kids to school in the morning. (Wife was away at the time with our other car).
They took the car to the local Bridgestone tyre shop in the morning and they had a look at it.
Rim was punctured as well so also needed to be replaced!
We were without the car for about two weeks while we waited for a new rim to arrive from MG in Auckland.

I’m going to get the damaged rim repaired and put a tyre on it and put it in the car as a spare.
There is room for a full sized spare in the boot, if you remove the foam insert that holds the repair kit and charger.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Common complaint of the Chinese EVs. BYD is the same. Can drop 10-20km/h off the set speed.

This is an MG thing. Pretty much any other EV uses the regen as part of cruise control to hold the speed accurately, even down hill.

Cheers for that. There is a hill descent control in the settings that I'll enable and I'll set cruise control and see what that does down Ngauranga Gorge on my way to work tomorrow. Not confident it'll make any difference but there's only one way to find out :-)

So, wife wanted to go on a road trip in the MG so we are at a Countdown in Hamilton stopping to charge at one of the old WEL 25kW units. I seem to remember these always being dodgy even in The Olden Days with the Leaf. Well this time the first unit failed so hard that not only would the car not charge, but it threw an HV control system fault and refused to start.

Fortunately being at a supermarket they sold spanners and after disconnecting the 12V battery for 30s it hard rebooted and we were able to start it. Moved to the other unit and it worked. Being only 25kW (she missed the turnoff to the one I had planned) we didn’t stay long but moved on and after picking berries we went to another charger - a much newer 50kW unit - and it worked first try.

Doing some googling reveals that apparently this is a thing with the 2022 model that does not happen with the 2021. More than a few people have been towed, presumably because they didn’t try the hard boot first. Not very impressed, they’d better bloody fix their software.

That "HV control system fault "  is a bit of a concern..   Hope they sort it via a software upgrade.

I've read about this in other places so have a mini toolkit (which contains a 10mm spanner) in the boot.

Yeah the spanner is going to live in the glovebox.

The wife and I are in the market for a new EV as our primary vehicle.

I'm personally leaning quite hard towards the Model Y for it's higher range and solid towing capacity (jetski and garden trailer) but I'm open minded!

I'm curious from the owners here if they also tried the following models (or any others for that matter) before ordering their MG and why you went with the MG over these other models:

- Model Y
- Kia Niro EV
- BYD Atto

I've test driven an Atto and also am a recent Model 3 owner.

Atto is great but lots of issues with the 12v battery which causes cars not to start. I've seen this often on the NZ FB page. It's so common that owners frequently test their 12v batteries to ensure it's good to go.

Owning the Model 3 (very similar to the Y) one thing that stands out is the regular software improvements and updates.

The other main benefit is the overall support for Teslas from accessories to service. Getting a tyre rotation at home costs just $39, as an example.

Also, the Model 3 and Y have a range of over 450km. To me 450km is a minimum for EVs so at most I only need to do one big charge once a week.

Update: typo

I would have thought taking the battery off would result in alsorts of issues and would need a reset.  Had this happen on a couple of Toyotas when the battery was replaced.  One lost the Key Fob link to the ignition   the the other lost some other functionality and had to be reset by Toyota.

if you want to tow and you can afford a model Y i'd consider EV6 as it has by far the biggest battery of the lot and pretty efficient

i've tested the prev gen ZS, Atto 3, EV6 RWD. there's not much to separate them, they are pretty basic EVs, pretty basic cars. some good points, mostly average points, nothing so bad to stop me getting one.

but you'd probably want to ask in other threads before some people get too annoyed.

My wife just picked up her ZS EV on Wednesday. Her Android phone is connected via Bluetooth and works fine but she doesn't appear to be getting notifcations about texts on the Infotainment screen.

Is this normal... is there a setting she needs to configure or will she need to plug it in and use Android Auto to get this feature?  I haven't had much time to look at it yet but thought I'd see if there was a simple answer before I fumbled around! :-)

Cheers
