Thats what I'd do. Just pay it and mention it to your friend in jest. Obviously if it's a decent amount I'd still pay it as soon as possible but try get the money from the friend.

Batman:

but is there a record against my name? if not that's easy i'll just pay it and save on the hassle

For speed camera tickets I don't believe there is a record against your name as there are no demerit points.

My wife has incurred a speed camera and a bus lane infringement notice which I've received under my name as the vehicle is registered to me.

Having had to deal and help out with a close relative who had a major interaction with authorities with regards to a series of motor vehicle related issues, I never saw any retained record of offences that did not involve direct interaction with a police officer.

So without ability to confirm, I suspect your "Record" is safe if its just a camera ticket.

Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll hunt him. Because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight.

Don't just pay it.  Yes the offence gets recorded in your name.  Depending what you do in the future this could cause some issues, for example firearms license, getting an endorsement on your license, or getting a transport service license.  Your traffic offence history is taken into account when making applications for some things.   May also impact your insurance.  Speed camera tickets are part of your offence history.  If you pay it, you are taking responsibility for the offence, and you may have to declare it, another example is when making a job application.

Immediately came to mind that you would need to notify your insurance of the breach.

We are in the market to buy a new car, so as a result of this thread I just applied for a quote online from Tower for car insurance based on a vehicle we looked at 2 weeks ago. Although it asked me about any previous criminal convictions there were no questions asking about any previous traffic fines/infringements.

Presumably it will be sent for debt collection which will sound a whole lot worse. As for traffic offence history, where it will be recorded other than demerits?

If someone asks for your traffic offence history surely you can say, I have no or historic demerit points? Presumably you could actually request this. Are parking tickets an offence too?

In fact you can request your driving record.

[snip]Got a letter for a speeding ticket,

I'd go by what the letter says to do in this situation - info straight from the horses mouth so to speak.
