Bung: It was the connector that was faulty.

The OP hasn't ruled out possible spillage by his son or friends.

You would need quite lot of liquid to soak the underlay to the extent described.  Like half a bucket.

@duckdecoy, by chance have you had a windscreen replaced in the short time you've had this vehicle?

No.  We bought the car Dec 20th 2022, its basically 1 month old.

We did however holiday in Coromandel across the xmas break and saw more rain than I think ive seen ever before.  The car was parked uncovered outside the place we hired the entire time.

Possible side note: I had Yakima roof racks installed prior to going away - fitted to the raised side things on the roof of the Outlander (not really separate roof rails per se, its a raised section of roofline either side of the roof).  I assumed this wouldn't be penetrative, but maybe...?

unless you drilled holes into the car of the roof i can't see how that will cause a leak.

don't run the A/C until you get it into the dealer.

shouldn't you show the dealer the extent of the problem before you clean it up bone dry?

P/S what roof side raised things does the outlander have?

Hire a portable wet vac.   I’m not sure if the rug doctor has a hand held attachment?
id say someone has spilled something then proceeded to try clean it making it more wet.

you don’t want rusting or corrosion of the said wiring or bungs that are under there so getting it dry asap is important

edit; don’t tell the dealer….. you don’t want a warranty claim down the track related to electrics not approved due to previous known spillage.

I don't think flush rails are attached through the roof. There appears to be securing brackets that fit inside the channel formed by the roof/side of car weld line. This is often covered with just a rubber strip.

What type of crossbars do you have? On our Suzuki the factory option Thule don't extend through the mount so nothing hangs over the roof. I preferred to use the type of bar that pokes out past the mount by about 150mm. That does mean when it is raining hard and you open the door you can get a bit more water dripping into the door opening. For flooded carpets you would still have to have done something like leave a window slightly open while parked and the seat would also be soaked.
