This is really a deckchair on the titanic type thing. I expect that we will start to see totally Chinese made EVs with a Toyota badge stuck onto them like they did with that awful Chev Cavalier some time back just to get something on the market that they can say they did an EV.

Toyota need a bridge between the now-very-delayed Solid State stuff they poured a bunch of time and energy into and the here and now, whereas they can probably engineer a decent enough platform to take advantage of decent battery tech without too much trouble.
I can understand why a BYD partnership would have some appeal in that regard. But they need to start delivering some wins, and they so far are yet to tick basic boxes like 'realistic EV concepts' at motor shows. When we see a close-to-possible-production-spec EV86, we'll know they're serious.
