Would love to know how the tyres caught on fire.

From the Reddit witness, it sounds like the person was drunk...so it's quite possible they ran into/over something and damaged the tyre/wheel. Being inebriated, they may not have noticed...

it would be very rare for a flat tire to catch alight. the guys at work have destroyed quite a few trailer tires. the tires just break apart. sometimes a broken bit of tire will damage the vehicle.

far more likely the brakes caught alight. not sure where the handbrake is on these, but it could be they where dragging the brake, or had run over something and it was lodged in there. or bit of tire ripped a brake hose off.

I can imagine that because of that route, you are stuck in the outside lane, no exits until the other side of the bridge, she may have just tried to get to a place where there was lots of space to get off the highway.

there are numerous places to stop prior to the bridge, and there is nothing stopping people changing lanes before the bridge.

Trailer tyres have no driving force.

makes minimal difference. its not like they are on steel rims.

trucks blow tires regularly, you don't see them catching on fire. wheels bearings or brakes, yes.

Don't come to a conclusion based on limited data.

"Drilling deeper into the statistics in the NTARC report, analysing the 33 per cent of truck fires which were deemed to be as a result of a tyre or wheel end failure or fault, it was found that brakes were to blame 30 per cent of the time, tyres were also the cause for 30 percent of incidents. Bearings were to blame on 15 per cent of occasions and the rest fell under the classification of being of an unknown cause. "

Trucks usually have somewhat-competent, somewhat-professional drivers who know not to drive on a flat tyre, and if you do have to, to drive very slowly and for a short distance.

As per above, sticky brakes and failed bearings can produce a tremendous amount of heat, especially when driven at speed.

Tyres can (and do) generate insane amounts of heat when deflated.

I had a sidewall blow out on a 4WD tyre at 100km/h a while back, and in the very short time it took to come to a stop, smoke was already pouring through the hole from the inside of the tyre because it was so hot.

I suggest you put down the mushrooms.

As far as I can tell from the pictures, the battery didn’t catch on fire. It would probably still be burning now if it did and considering the age of the harbour bridge, would have melted through “China Syndrome”-wise and landed in the harbour (/joking).
