Glad to hear it. But my post was inspired by a news item about screen-only controls. I think it was highlighting the new Cadillac. In any case, I have no issue if what you state is true.

I would be very surprised if a Cadillac didn't have button controls on the steering wheel.

If you're that determined to have the last word, you can have it. I only know what was in the report.

In my car, whilst i listen to a podcast, and have google maps on display,it takes 6 button presses, consisting of 4 touch and 2 real button presses, to change to a preset FM station, and get back to google maps. This is all non steering wheel controls.

That's a lot of distraction time. I'm getting better at quickly changing, but the first couple of times was downright scary at motorway speeds. Passengers had a death grip on the dash and madly pumping with their right leg at the imaginary brake pedal in the passenger well.

At least I can then flick thru the presets using those controls.

Touch screens in cars are the antithesis of ergonomic especially those cars where even adjusting the rear view mirrors(display) is a drill down in the stupid menu systems. Even as a passenger it is a pain in the butt trying to zero in on an icon with G forces the road surface bouncing you around the cabin. This method is about profits not ergonomics.

As for the right hand seat, that has one purpose, to drive the vehicle it is not a Cafe seat, it is not the breakfast, lunch or dinner seat, it is not a makeup chair and it is not an office chair.

I rarely interact with my car once I've set off on my journey.

Start the car, plug in my phone, set a destination in Google maps, pick a Spotify playlist and off I go. At most I'll change the volume or skip a song I don't like by using the steering wheel buttons. The climate control has been set to 21*C since I bought the car and basically never changes.

Anything more challenging than that means I wait until I get a chance to pull over.

We didn't buy a Tesla for many reasons the ergonomics was one of them

Buttons on the steering wheel are all good.

However, when you have to delve into the touchscreen, just to change\adjust the temp etc (I'm looking at you VW), then that as the Op is eluding to is just plain daft.

A AutoTrader UK review of the VW ID3 goes into this.

If you have to take your eyes off the road, just to try and warm up, or worse, change the HVAC, that is a big problem.

IMO, if you're having to constantly adjust the HVAC settings then the vehicle has deficiencies greater than the touchscreen.

So you are saying environmental conditions are static along with occupant comfort status.

When it comes to setting a temperature, yes. The HVAC in your vehicle should be able to maintain a set temperature whether it's winter or summer. Mine has been set to 21c the entire time I've had it.

I have an ICE car and often want to change the temperature while underway. I enjoy a periodic blast of heat, but that then becomes too much to sustain. I think it is kind of arrogant to assume that what works for you should work for everyone. Different folks different strokes and all that. I just like being able to safely control my car's parameters while underway. I think the car should be designed to serve the driver's preferences, not the other way around.

And you don't think this was a touch arrogant on your part?:

Rikkitic:

My objection to touch screens for inputs is that they create an unnecessary distraction hazard (how much of one can be debated) and they are completely unnecessary gimmicks used by marketing people to appeal to those who move their lips when they read

I think the majority of people are going to be more in my boat - they set a temperature and as long as the HVAC system is good at maintaining that temperature no matter what the outside weather is, they will rarely touch it.

I also dislike the touch sensitive "buttons" finding their way of the steering wheels especially on Euro boxes.
