lxsw20:

Android Auto would work with the Android phone, and Apple CarPlay with the iPhone. It's worth it. I never use my car's inbuild maps, when I can have live traffic etc with Google Maps.

You can download your areas maps to keep the data use lower too.

that would be my issues then as wife and myself use different phones (apple android)

downloading the maps i guess will be saved on the phone and not the car....is that right?

so android auto and carplay use software on the phone which then projects to the car display unit.  Think of the screen in the car as "dumb" everything is run from the phone.

In my old car it had a switch in the cars OS on which one you wanted to use, in my new car both can supported without having to change anything (just plug the phone in).  You will need to check with the dealership

Is it worth the update?  Yes it is, this way you can get calls, get text message read out while driving, reply to them, have access to siri / hey google etc

One single upgrade to your vehicle will give both Android Auto, and Apple Carplay. It's a win/win.

It's not much of a win having to pay for an upgrade to get Carplay and AA on a 2019 vehicle.

If it's going to cost $300 just for a map upgrade, I'd argue it is. Sure, some vehicles had AA/AC included in 2019 (some a few years earlier), but according to previous posts the vehicle in question apparently did not. Yeah it sucks, but it's how it is.

ok either with AA or AC that would be a bit "useless" if the phone is NOT connected.

can we have both? i mean let say for some reason I forgot my phone, got broken or stolen, can I choose on the screen to use the "inbuilt " audio navigation system?

Also, to install that AA / AC...is it just a software installation? or does it involved any new parts?

thanks heaps to everyone for the information, very useful.

I have seen that...

"This includes the Audio Upgrade Kit and components"

hence my question regarding if any parts needs to be installed.

Not to be that guy but…

This audio upgrade fitted RRP is $299 including GST. This includes the Audio Upgrade Kit and components, as well as one hour of labour required to fitout the vehicle.

Perhaps a call to your local Toyota dealership might help answer that question?

I did this to my 2019 Corolla. I was confused as I have the SX, and then jumped in a newer GX rental which had Carplay, Android Auto. However it may be factory from that date, or I suspect all the rental car companies had it installed.

It's honestly the best $300 I've spent on anything car related. The screen resolution actually looks improved. Yes you have to have it physically plugged in all the time. The difference for me (I drive a lot for work) is I no longer charge my phone at night, as it will get to 100% each day in the car.

Yes it will use data, but you download all of NZ's google maps to your phone anyway. I don't even use a windscreen dock anymore as all the notifications are the main screen, voice recognition is vastly improved. And yes, the old maps just sit there in the background or load up if you don't plug in.

Yes it's annoying to pay for, but ring BMW and see what it costs to install from them! And I don't think there is any hardware, it's just software, and I'm sure you could possibly do it yourself, I wouldn't have clue. My car gets serviced three times a year so I just had them do it then.

Considering the price of the same model Toyota RAV4 went up by ~$1500 in 2020, which then includes AA & AC, it's still a win.
