I’m also a regular watcher of this channel, and one of their favourite areas is lightweight, small EVs - many being minimalist ‘micro-cars’ that can be driven on a motorcycle licence. My sense is that cost is definitely a key rationale to not include entertainment systems in many of these small EVs. Some come with a removable BT speaker as an alternative.

It’s a pity we’ll not probably see any of these here in NZ, though personally I’d not want to be involved in an accident when in one!

I am glad we wont see trash like that on the road here. They are golf carts not cars.

MadEngineer: That would annoy me, I wouldn’t buy a car without an FM radio. Seems super weird to me especially when you’d normally expect any vehicle to have a radio in it for emergency use (not that it should replace one from your emergency pack).

Many of them can be set to automatically switch to traffic announcements (TA)… unsure if that’s employed in NZ

(In before someone poo-poos the audio quality. )

Traffic announcements are worthless when you have integrated maps or android auto or carplay. They had their place in the 90s but no more, Auckland is too large of an area to have someone read out every single holdup and hear it in a reasonable time when I can see a red line on the map on my route and have the time update for me.

It's probably been around a decade since I've listened to broadcast radio or watched broadcast TV. In the car I usually listen to a podcast (usually the ZM morning show) if I want to listen to people talk or a tailored playlist on Spotify if I want music.

I think people, not cars, are accelerating the demise of broadcast radio, it's just that the car is the last bastion of the radio since we upgrade them slower than household appliances.

We are becoming much more reliant on much less resilient infrastructure. I've been to several events lately where the music was rough because the hosts were reliant on streaming for music but the cellular coverage was insufficient. I installed satellite freeview at my brothers place in the Hawkes Bay recently for emergency information reasons - when the Feb23 storms killed the cellular infrastructure down there, he was left without a clue what was going on despite having back-up power.

I don't think the two issues you highlighted have anything to do with the modern infrastructure but rather the wrong tool for the job. If I was running an event that needed music then I would make sure I had an offline copy of what is I'm playing (which all streaming services provide). If I was in a remote location that relies on cellular internet I'd probably replace it with Starlink instead.

I wonder if Japan's JDM regs require AM in cars for J-Alert and similar emergency services. There's really no way to get adequate FM coverage for emergency. More so, in countries like Japan and NZ.

I listen to radio, mostly FM but also sometimes AM, in my Prius and it all seems fairly normal. Admittedly we don't listen to broadcast radio in the house much anymore but in the car I rather like the mix of music-i-dont-have-to-choose and news/current events discussions.

No signature to see here, move along...
