sonyxperiageek: Why is the PS5 cheaper than the PS4 I wonder?

https://advantagetyres.co.nz/product-category/tyre/?width=245&profile=45&rim=18

That link showed a Pilot Sport 4 vs Pilot Sport 5.

The S version is generally a more sports orientated tyre so probably adds a premium to pricing. There is supposed to be a Pilot Sport 5 S, but might get a name change to PSS5.

I went through this drama trying to find PS4S for smaller wheels but had to get PS3 (no S).

I agree the Pilot Sport S 5 (and the 4S) is an ultra high performance tyre with less durability all things considered.

I think the Pilot Sport 5 is the same tier as the RE003 i.e. not as high performance but still a sporting tyre.

Nah there were three tyre prices in that link. PS4 were $724 per tyre, PS4S were $800 per tyre and PS5 were $547 per tyre. Big difference between the PS4 and PS5 for some reason!

It appears that back in 2021, the RE004 replaced the RE003.

We don't seem to have access to these newer tyres in NZ. I would take that "Costco gets old stock" comment with a pinch of salt.

I do know from experience that Costco are an authorised Michelin NZ retailer however. I managed to get cheaper than Costco prices - I went to JP Tyres in Glenfield, another authorised dealer.

It’s stupidly easy to find out how old the tyres are from the date code on them. It sounds like tyre shop FUD.

Yeah they told me how to check the date of manufacturer on the tyres, last four digits somewhere on the tyre represent the month and year of manufacture.

Maybe I'll try the PS5 from Costco this time round as it's pretty much the same price as the cheapest place selling the RE003s.

Last year Costco didn't do wheel alignments. Does anyone know if this has changed?

Still no wheel alignments when I called them up about this quote a couple of days ago.

Nothing stopping you getting an alignment else where. If the price is big enough difference I wouldn't make the alignment the deciding factor.

I think for SV6 output, I would stick with PS5 or Continental UC6 - they are good balance vs cost. If you track your car; PS4s or PS5s.

My BMWs run above tyres and they run really well for street. I stopped tracking the cars…

Tried calling Costco tyres again today but they never picked up. Just wanted to confirm with them that their PS5 were actually $1600 for all four and if so, I don't think that's a bad deal and will try these out instead of sticking with the RE003s this time.

Been reading PS4 vs RE003 threads. Seems that PS4 has better grip, but much softer sidewalls (for better rolling resistance and comfort), vs the RE003 which has very heavy, stiff sidewalls. Means the PS4 is a lot lighter / floater in the steering, which some people didn't like. Other major complaint seems to be high cost of the PS4 vs RE003, which doesn't seem to apply at the moment in auckland.

Can't find much on PS5, but it should be a general improvement. Sadly the RE004 improvement of the RE003 is not available in NZ / AUST yet.

Could give some thought to saving $90, and going for the Primacy. Trade a little grip for more quietness, comfort and tread life.

On Powergy, complaints of noise and poor grip here:

https://www.tyrereviews.com/Tyre/Pirelli/Powergy.htm

On the Turanza's, this does seem oddly expensive. Had a set fitted to the corolla ~5 years back. They were the serenity plus ones, and about the same price as Ecopia's (I didn't price performance tires). I found them extremely floaty, and had a heap less grip than the GT Radial Campero 228's they replaced (perhaps it is unfair to compare a long life touring tire with a performance touring tire). But the tread life was exceptional. 9.3mm when they were new, and they still had more than 8mm when I sold the car 20,000km later. Prior tire set had worn out in under 40,000km.

Possibility Bridgestone isn't so keen on selling tires with a tread life warranty in commodore size :)

On tread life, the 60,000km you are getting out of RE003's is really good for performance tyres. (lots of people on the aussie product review website upset about poor tread life of these). Suggest your use case must be fairly easy on tyres, and you can expect to get great tread life out of anything.

There is going to be some inherent risk in changing from a tire that you are happy with. On paper, the PS5 seems the obvious pick, but the risk that you won't like the change (especially with reports of lighter steering feel), always remains.

I think this is a global thing. Very annoying they eaisly do enough volume to support an alignment machine and it would have saved me from going elsewhere

Several times I've had 4 old tyres showing very even wear an have skipped getting an alignment done.

The last time I was looking to replace tyres I tried the local tyre shops then noticed that the dealer garage had a tyre bay. They were able to do a better price and better tyre because they sold so many of that size.

I'm having to replace my front Pilot Sport 4 tyres at the moment after 30k.  Tyres suffer damage from dry turning (never had that issues before).  Continental Tyres in Newmarket have 25% off until the end of July.  Was quoted around $620 each for Pilot Sport 4S's.

On my mazda6 sedan I got just under 40,000Km on the RE003s, so 60,000km seems excellent by comparison.

The RE003s (215/45/R17) were replaced around August last year with PS5's chosen due to various reasons.
I found the best prices were given by walking in and asking. Depending on the day of the week your luck might vary.

Advantage quoted (including alignment)
PS5's at about $1190
Primacy at about $1040
from memory this was something like a 25% discount from their standard web price.

Below is the short list of a range of potential replacements I ended up with via internet gossip and a Goodyear Autocare store that was really helpful in sorting through a larger list.
Michelin PS5, Primacy 4+
Bridgestone RE003, Serenity
Goodyear Eagle F1 Sport
Dunlop SP Sport MAXX 060+
BFGoodrich Advantage Touring

Out of curiosity, would they not discount over the phone or website? It would make it difficult to figure out which shops to go into! Good tip for next time thanks.
