The NZTA is taking over the speed trap operation from next year.

Ahem - that's "safety cameras" actually....

I often wondered where the person is in our mobile cameras - whenever I looked there seemed to be nobody in the van... but I didn't look too closely and they could be hiding or flat down asleep in the back!

Rear/swivel chair, sitting at the terminal monitoring it. often masked (now) by stick on blinds placed beside the camera between rear seats, assisted by the tints.
And new fancy sensor/ISO so no need for the flash on the bumper anymore.

But they're there. From my limited understanding they get a popup of each offender. And manually verify/log/validate the image/details (if quick enough) also to assist with contest. Have heard of people contesting the quality of the plate in the image and abandoned as there was no further match noted to assist with verification.

What are the vans like. Are they a uniform colour and any distinguishing features.

Unsure of other regions but Canterbury was a navy blue VW?, and more recently a white Hyundai

Non descript other than legal tints. What appeared to be high backed seats. Or at least stick on blinds or similar that make it look like. And a chunk of clear area/missing (left of centre) where the mounted camera sits.
Find yourself looking out for any parked up people mover or tradie van that isn't beat up and easy to spot a mile off

Whereas QLD they have identifable striping, and sit with a sign they chuck out AFTER it normally, that say speed enforcement area.

Or the alternative - manage your speed properly, and then you don't have to worry about keeping an eye out for the vans or consequences.  Just sayin...

Random late model vans of all colours in Auckland. Mostly Hyundais but also VWs and others.

Where I live they are easy to spot. Clearly not a tradie van and not common as people movers. As soon as I see a late model tinted window van I'm suspicious. Once you get close you can  see the equipment through the back window.

Any hidden or unmarked camera is a missed opportunity to remind people to slow down. I think QLD have it right.

That old retort. Never gets old /s

Good job officer. I don't need to. And I've not been drawn over coles in over 30yrs.

Anyone behind the wheel knows management means looking out the window and at your surroundings and dash. Including others around you

And at times that means you are naturally or otherwise in an imaginary posted speed zone. That patrol cars drive past you and don't blink twice at because it's not considered 'speeding'.

I actually endorse the forces. The 'looking out for' is as much a thing to me as your kids sitting in the back playing eye spy.

But thanks for the life lesson really needed it.

Once famously uttered. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
