More likely it's getting a time from RDS and losing signal/changing frequency/local interference driving through that point. Be interesting to know if changing the radio station changes the behaviour.

I think the best people to ask in this instance would be Toyota NZ. I'm sure they could probably procure a similar vehicle and go for a drive.

This happens in the first episode of the X Files.

 

You need to get out and spray an X on the road like it's really important and then not do it again for like another seven years.
